Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl will not be taking over at Leicester City

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is reportedly out of the running to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at Leicester City.

That’s according to Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett, who claims that Rohl is no longer in the frame to take over at Leicester as the deal to bring him to the King Power Stadium would be “too complicated” to complete.

The Foxes have been on the hunt for a new manager since parting company with Ruud van Nistelrooy last month following their relegation from the Premier League, with the Dutchman departing after winning just five of his 27 games in charge.

Rohl is currently in negotiations with Wednesday over a deal that would see his tenure at Hillsborough come to an end, and he was named as one of the early contenders to succeed van Nistelrooy at Leicester.

It was even claimed that the compensation fee the Foxes would have needed to pay to release Rohl from his contract with the Owls had been reduced to just £1 million, but the East Midlands outfit now appear to be turning their attention elsewhere.

After leading Wednesday to a 12th-placed finish in the Championship last season, Rohl has been linked with a host of other clubs this summer, including Southampton, Middlesbrough, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, but his high release clause has been a problem for many of his suitors.

It has been a nightmare summer for the Owls, with the club currently under three separate transfer embargoes, as well as being hit with a three-window transfer fee ban for the late payment of wages in May and June, and it appears Rohl’s time at Hillsborough will be coming to an end imminently as discussions continue over a severance package.

Rohl did not return to Wednesday for the start of pre-season training last month, and he has not travelled with the squad for their camp at St George’s Park this week, but while the German may soon be on the hunt for a new job, he will not be taking over at Leicester.

Rohl was viewed as one of the initial front-runners to replace van Nistelrooy at the King Power Stadium, but other candidates have emerged in the frame in recent days, with FLW exclusively revealing on Saturday that the Foxes have held talks with former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder.

According to Dorsett, Wilder is “still very much an option” for Leicester, along with ex-Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil, who is believed to be one of the main contenders for the role, but Rohl and former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche are no longer under consideration.

Rohl is said to have informed Wednesday of his desire to leave the club back in April, but it has been a frustrating summer for the 36-year-old, who has failed to land any of the jobs he has been linked with.

Rohl’s release clause has been a stumbling block for many clubs, and despite the figure required to prize him away from Hillsborough being reduced to just £1 million, it seems Leicester have instead switched their focus to out-of-work managers, such as Wilder and O’Neil.

Given that the Foxes could be hit with a points deduction next season, Rohl may eventually feel that he has dodged a bullet by not taking over at the King Power Stadium, but as things stand, it looks as though he will be starting the new campaign without a club.
