Wigan Athletic boss reveals ‘a bit of interest’ in transfer-listed former Fulham, Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle and Charlton Athletic man Steven Sessegnon.

Wigan Athletic have already received ‘a bit of interest’ in Steven Sessegnon, who was placed on the transfer list at the end of last season.
The 25-year-old had a great debut season with the Latics after signing from Premier League Fulham in the summer of 2023.

However, last season was a catastrophe, with injuries plaguing him for long stretches. Indeed, his last outing for Latics was a 3-0 home defeat to Birmingham City on January 4.
He returned to the bench near the end of the season but never played until Lowe took over in March. And, given that he did not appear to suit Lowe’s new 3-4-3 shape, it was unsurprising that his availability was disseminated to other clubs.
Lowe says that there is no personal issue and is eager to assist the player in getting back on track as soon as possible.
“There’s been a bit of interest in Sess, but I’ll keep that between me and him,” he said. “We’ll continue to talk about it, and he knows where he stands.
“He’s a fantastic lad and he’s been absolutely brilliant in pre-season so far, he hasn’t missed a session.” He’s excellent around here, he gets along well with the boys, and he always encourages everyone.
He understands his predicament, and it is never personal. “He’s a wonderful player and a fantastic young man, but he’s a full-back and will most likely want to play that position. “He probably won’t want to play wing-back or midfield, and he’ll never play at the top of the pitch.
“I can’t say anything negative about Sess; he’s a brilliant pro and a wonderful kid. Unfortunately, he wants to play full-back, and I don’t. “So if he wants to play games, he may have to go somewhere else, and we will try to provide him that option if feasible.
“He’ll stay with us until the perfect time comes, when someone wants him, but while he’s here, he’ll be fit and available. “It’s not that his face doesn’t fit; rather, it fits better than before. But I know Sess, and he knows me, so there’s no use in him hanging around and not playing.
“He knows that and I know that…and while he’s here, he will be available for selection.” Sessegnon, like his twin brother Ryan, rose through the ranks at Fulham.
After making 21 appearances for the Cottagers and being loaned out to Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle, and Charlton Athletic, Sessegnon hoped for a fresh start when he moved north to Wigan.
However, in his two years with Latics, he has only made 44 appearances, with the highlight being a stunning goal in the FA Cup victory over Exeter City on November 23. He came close to facing his brother Ryan in last season’s FA Cup, but was an unused substitute in Fulham’s 2-1 triumph at the Brick.
