Middlesbrough are playing catch-up in the summer transfer window as Championship rivals continue to strengthen at speed, leaving the Teessiders trailing in the early stages of pre-season preparations.
Since the appointment of Rob Edwards as Boro’s new head coach, attention has primarily focused on settling the new management team rather than bringing in new faces. Birmingham City made a huge statement of intent by signing former Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi in a move that has stunned many across the division. The Japanese international arrives with a wealth of top-level experience and an impressive goal-scoring record, immediately raising the Blues’ attacking threat.
Leeds United and Norwich City have also been proactive. For Boro, the lack of movement so far is concerning, particularly with the size of the rebuild ahead. The club said goodbye to a number of senior players at the end of last season, including loanees who played significant roles. That’s left Edwards with a threadbare squad, especially in midfield and attack.
The club hierarchy insists work is being done behind the scenes, with several targets identified, but the delay in appointing Edwards appears to have stalled the recruitment process. With time ticking down before the season opener, pressure is mounting on the recruitment team to deliver reinforcements capable of turning Boro into promotion contenders.
Supporters, while excited about Edwards’ potential, are eager to see that optimism translated into tangible progress on the pitch—and that starts with new signings.
