QPR stunned the Premier League with the signing of Man Utd & England legend for £0

Nobody anticipated that Rio Ferdinand would sign a free agent contract with QPR after his illustrious tenure at

Manchester United ended in the summer of 2014.

The Hoops were expecting to make a major impression in the league with a number of high-profile acquisitions after

being relegated in 2013 and then promoted back to the Premier League.

Among those that joined Ferdinand were Leroy Fer, Steven Caulker, Sandro, and Jordan Mutch. Although the

London team demonstrated a willingness to spend, no player stood out as much as the centre-back.

It had been a disappointing end to Ferdinand’s time at Old Trafford, but there was no denying the incredible success

he’d enjoyed in his time with the club, which led to a lot of excitement when he opted to make the move to Loftus

Road for the final stages of his career.

Rio Ferdinand didn’t have QPR impact he nor the club would’ve hoped for

Sadly, Ferdinand’s arrival did not have the beneficial effect that supporters had hoped for.

at 81 caps for England, six league titles, two EFL Cups, and a Champions League during his tenure at Manchester

United, the centre-back added leadership and experience to Harry Redknapp’s team.

However, around 35, it was evident that he could no longer compete at the same level as before, and fitness and

injuries were also a problem.

In the Hoops’ first league game of the season, they lost 1-0 to Hull City, and Ferdinand made his debut for the team.

But following that, the seasoned defender only made ten more appearances in the Premier League, and the squad

only won twice when he was on the pitch.

Additionally, he participated in an FA Cup match against Sheffield United, where the Premier League team fell to

League One opponents 3-0.

Ferdinand’s QPR stint ended his career at a low point

Ferdinand hung up his boots and ended his extraordinarily successful career after making a total of 12 matches in a

single season.

He did, however, leave QPR on a poor note because the team finished in 20th position and was relegated back to the

Championship.

As a result, neither the player nor the team or its supporters will have pleasant memories of the center-back’s time at

Loftus Road.

Many years later, Ferdinand finally apologised on the Stick to Football podcast in April 2024 for not finishing his

career at Old Trafford.

He remarked, “I wish I had stayed at Manchester United to finish my career instead of moving to QPR.”

“Because I had never been in a changing room where people were discussing money and wages before.”

I thought it was crazy when I heard players whispering about it. Because they were on a set amount of money, the

players didn’t want to train, the intensity wasn’t that high, and they didn’t buy into whatever Harry Redknapp was

trying to achieve. As a result, that team was demoted.

Everyone concerned regrets the decision, as QPR has not been able to return to the Premier League since their 2015 relegation.
