FORMER Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has secured a lucrative new job after being appointed as the new technical director at the Spanish Football Federation.
Karanka, who guided Boro to promotion from the Championship during his three-and-a-half years at the Riverside, will be in charge of both the senior Spain national team and the various representative levels within the Spanish Federation’s youth system.
He will work closely with Spain manager Luis de la Fuente in the run-up to next year’s World Cup finals in North America, having previously served as a senior technical advisor for UEFA.
“I left here several years ago, but I’ve always considered this my home,” said Karanka, who previously worked with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid before taking over at Middlesbrough in November 2013.
“It’s great to see familiar faces in prominent positions again. I am excited to work and contribute. It is a privilege.
After leaving Teesside, Karanka managed Nottingham Forest and Birmingham before moving on to lead Granada and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
“Aitor, this was your home, and now it is again,” remarked Rafael Louzan, head of the Spanish Football Federation. “You’re taking on new duties, and I’m convinced you’ll work well with Luis.
“Your support will provide stability and substantially benefit the young national teams. We are contributing to this fantastic project, which represents the national team and the home of Spanish football.”
