Gudmundsson Medical News Drops Ahead of Leeds United Transfer
Gabriel Gudmundsson is undergoing a medical at Leeds United as the club moves swiftly to secure a replacement for departed left-back Junior Firpo.
The 25-year-old Swedish international has landed in West Yorkshire, with sources close to the club confirming he’s currently at Thorp Arch completing the final stages of his medical before signing terms with the Whites. It’s the latest move in what has been a fast-paced summer for Leeds United as they prepare for another promotion push under head coach Daniel Farke.
Leeds have made it clear they needed reinforcements on the left side of defence following Firpo’s exit last month, with the Dominican Republic international choosing not to renew his contract at Elland Road. The club had drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements, but Gudmundsson quickly emerged as their top target due to his experience in both Ligue 1 with Lille and the Bundesliga during an earlier spell in Germany.
Gudmundsson, known for his pace and attacking instinct, fits the mold of a Farke-style full-back — capable of overlapping runs, providing width, and delivering dangerous balls into the box. Despite Lille’s initial reluctance to part with the Swede, Leeds managed to negotiate a fee in the region of £6 million, with personal terms said to be a formality.
A source inside the club told *LeedsLive*, “It’s a deal we’ve been working on for a while, and with Firpo gone, it was vital we acted fast. Gabriel is someone who’s been tracked for a few seasons and he’s ready for a new challenge.”
If all goes to plan, Gudmundsson is expected to be unveiled as a Leeds player within the next 24 hours, possibly even in time to travel with the squad for their upcoming pre-season tour. His arrival marks Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer window, following the additions of Joe Rodon, Ilia Gruev (permanent), and striker Ben Brereton Díaz.
Fans have reacted positively to the news, with many praising the club’s proactive recruitment strategy. After the disappointments of last season, which saw Leeds fall short in the play-offs, there is a renewed sense of optimism around the squad. Farke has been promised greater backing in the transfer market, and Gudmundsson’s signing signals intent from the board.
There remains hope that further signings will follow before the Championship campaign kicks off in August. A new goalkeeper and creative midfielder are also believed to be on the agenda, though the club is keen not to rush deals and risk disrupting the squad dynamic.
For now, however, the focus is on getting Gudmundsson through the door and integrated quickly. If his medical results are satisfactory, and no last-minute hitches occur, Leeds United fans can expect to see their new number three donning the white shirt very soon.
