Where Blackburn Rovers’ best paid player from 10 years ago is right now

Blackburn Rovers haven’t played in the Premier League for the past ten years.

The Lancashire team hasn’t even finished in the top six of the Championship in the years since they were demoted from the top division in 2012.

Although Rovers swiftly recovered and were promoted back to the second division in 2018, they even suffered another relegation to League One in 2017.

Keeping his team in the running this season, John Eustace will be trying to lead Blackburn back to at least a play-off spot.

Here, we use Capology’s estimated data to examine the current status of the club’s highest paid player from the 2014–15 season.

Blackburn’s highest earner 2014/15

Jordan Rhodes was the highest paid player at Ewood Park in the 2014–15 season, with an estimated weekly pay of £35,000.

During this time, when Blackburn was vying for a spot in the playoffs, the forward was quite productive for the squad.

After Rovers were relegated from the Premier League in the summer of 2012, the now 35-year-old joined the team.

In his first two seasons, he scored 27 and 25 goals, helping the team finish 17th and eighth in the standings, respectively.

Season Appearances (Starts) Goals (Assists)
2012-13 43 (42) 27 (4)
2013-14 46 (45) 25 (3)
2014-15 45 (40) 21 (4)
2015-16 25 10

By the start of the 2014–15 season, when he added another 21 to his league total—Blackburn coming in ninth—this had justified his large wage.

Other high earners include Grant Hanley, a defender who receives £18,000 a week, and Leon Best, who was earning £32,000 per week.

Rhodes’ pay was far more than that of his teammates, as seen by the £7,989 average weekly income at Rovers at the time.

The striker ultimately departed Ewood Park midway through the following season, scoring another 10 times in the Championship before departing for Middlesbrough.

Jordan Rhodes’ career since leaving Blackburn

Rhodes left for Middlesbrough during the January transfer window of 2016, and the team was automatically promoted back to the Premier League that season thanks to his six goals from 18 appearances.

However, Rhodes left for Sheffield Wednesday in January 2017 after a challenging start to life in the top division.

Up until the summer of 2023, Rhodes played for the Owls, Norwich City, and Huddersfield Town as he moved about the Championship over the following several years.

During his loan stint at Carrow Road in the 2018–19 season, he even helped the Canaries gain automatic promotion to the Premier League by scoring six goals in 36 games.

He almost repeated the feat a few years later, moving to Huddersfield after Sheffield Wednesday were relegated in the summer of 2021.

The forward contributed three goals and three assists from 21 appearances in his first year with the Terriers, with Carlos Corberan’s side reaching the play-off final.

Rhodes spent another season with the Yorkshire outfit before moving to Blackpool in 2023.

His debut season with the League One team ended in eighth place, almost missing out on a play-off spot, despite his 15 goals.

Rhodes, 35, has finished the Seasiders’ second season with just three starts from 21 games and zero goals, which has caused him to drop down the rankings.

Due to this, he left the team on loan during the January transfer window and will now play the rest of the season for League One rivals Mansfield Town.
