Ipswich Town have shrugged off Swansea City transfer blow emphatically with ex-West Brom man

Ipswich Town has firmly rejected Swansea City’s transfer blow with an ex-West Brom player.

Burgess was one of the first names on the team sheet in the Championship, starting 38 of 46 games. The Australian international was a vital member of the Ipswich teams that won promotion twice in a row. Burgess was crucial to McKenna’s plans while he was available, as evidenced by the fact that he started 16 of the 18 games he played in the most recent Premier League season.

The 29-year-old chose to pursue another option in the south of Wales despite the club’s understandable offer of a new deal. He will provide Swansea with a significant defensive boost ahead of 2025–2026 after just finishing his first season in the top division. Ipswich’s goal this summer is to replace their major departures in order to return to the Premier League as soon as possible, and it appears that they may have done so with Cedric Kipre’s expected arrival at Portman Road.

Every time Cedric Kipre has participated in the Championship, he has been brilliant. First, at Wigan Athletic, where he earned a transfer to West Bromwich Albion, a Premier League team at the time. In the 2022–2023 season, he also had a successful loan stint with Cardiff City.

He struggled to get playing time at The Hawthorns right away, but in his one real season there, he helped Carlos Corberan’s team qualify for the 2023–2024 playoffs and won West Brom’s players’ player of the season award. Kipre, an Ivory Coast international who was born in France, played for Stade Reims in Ligue 1 the previous season. Although he was unable to keep them in France’s top division, he played a crucial role in their incredible journey to the Coupe de France final, where they were defeated by PSG.

A move back to England and to a division where he would instantly become one of the better players in his position may be in the cards, as Kipre is unlikely to want to play in Ligue 2 next season. Ipswich is hoping to sign the 28-year-old on loan with the intention of buying him if they win promotion.

It would also fit perfectly. Kipre placed in the top 20% of center-backs in both aerial and ground duels two seasons ago. Even after Reims was demoted, he continued to rank favourably among his position’s players in Ligue 1 last season.

Cedric Kipre’s defensive stats in the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season, per Fotmob
Tackles won 30
Duels won 105
Aerial duels won 42
Interceptions 32
Recoveries 73

After Axel Tuanzebe and Cameron Burgess left, Ipswich was in dire need of centre-back cover. Kipre would be hoping to establish himself in the starting eleven in addition to providing cover.

Kipre was acquired by West Brom during their Premier League tenure, but it wasn’t until they returned to the Championship that he made his league debut for the Baggies. As a result, the 28-year-old has not yet made his Premier League debut despite being included in several English top-flight squads.

L’Equipe has stated that a sum of £3.9 million will be agreed upon to bring Kipre to Portman Road permanently if Ipswich makes an immediate comeback from the Championship this season. You would think that McKenna would try to keep Kipre participating in 2026–2027 if the Ivorian could help his team accomplish their main objective this season. Then, for the first time in his career, he would be able to play Premier League minutes and accomplish a personal objective.
