Oldham boosted by duo’s return to action

If Oldham wins on Sunday against Sheffield Eagles at Boundary Park, they will close the gap on third place in the BetFred Championship.

Sean Long’s side is searching for their third straight league win since April, which may pull them level with either York or Bradford, who square off this weekend.

Roughyeds will be strong favourites, especially as Sheffield have only won one of their last six games, and Oldham will be boosted by the inclusion of key players Matty Wildie and Kieran Dixon.

Both individuals have been on the sidelines for extended periods of time, with Wildie having elbow surgery and Dixon having arm surgery, but they are set to be selected to Long’s 21-man roster tomorrow.

Their return to health comes at an important time, as Oldham face a difficult run of fixtures, including away journeys to Bradford and York, as they look to boost their position in the play-offs.

One setback for Oldham is the likely absence of Ryan Lannon, who suffered a rib injury in last weekend’s 22-4 victory over Widnes.

Sheffield, who are currently third from bottom, have struggled this season under Craig Lingard.

The Eagles finished fourth in 2022 and nearly missed out on knockout rugby last year under previous head coach Mark Aston, who was sentenced to an 18-month suspension in October for medical compliance violations. However, results have been scarce this season, with Lingard’s side currently six points short of safety.

They will most likely compete in the end-of-season showdown with the other three bottom sides and the top four teams from League One.
