Middlesbrough push for transfer breakthrough with bid tabled for leading target

BLACKBURN Rovers face a significant choice on Callum Brittain after Middlesbrough made a formal approach for the full-back this week. Derby County has also made an offer for the 27-year-old, whose contract with Blackburn will end in less than a year.

Earlier this summer, Blackburn were optimistic of securing a contract extension with Brittain, but they have failed to make a breakthrough, and Rovers must now decide whether to concede defeat in their quest to keep the right-back.

According to our sister site, the Lancashire Telegraph, Rovers have yet to accept an offer from Boro or Derby, but there is growing speculation that the defender may go this summer. What is unclear at this point is Blackburn’s valuation of Brittain, though Rovers will undoubtedly hope that the competition for the full-back’s services will push up the price.

Derby manager John Eustace wants to reconcile with Brittain, who was a major element of his Blackburn club. Wrexham has also been related. Boro will not enter a bidding war and will have other choices in the position if necessary, but Brittain has emerged as a top target in a position that Boro needs to reinforce.

Boro has only one senior right-back, Luke Ayling. Brittain is coming off the best season of his career, and Blackburn believe the right-back, who was a standout at Ewood Park, is one of the best in the Championship.

Valerien Ismael will be questioned about Brittain’s predicament during Blackburn’s pre-season friendly against Accrington on Saturday. It’s unclear whether the defender will play.

Boro’s move for Brittain this week implies that the club is planning to ramp up its recruitment campaign in order to enhance Rob Edwards’ team ahead of the upcoming Championship season.

Boro face Santa Clara in a training game in Portugal on Saturday, before beginning their domestic pre-season campaign at Mansfield the following weekend.

Boro are looking to reinforce in numerous positions in the next weeks, including a centre-forward, midfielder, central defense, and wide attacker.
