Is Jared Wiley’s roster spot in danger entering his second season?

In 2024, Jared Wiley was selected in the fourth round. However, is his position on the Chiefs’ tight end depth chart guaranteed after

an injury?

In the upcoming month and a half, the Kansas City Chiefs will have to make a number of important roster decisions. Tight end is one

of those positions that is worth keeping an eye on. Naturally, superstar Travis Kelce, who is into his 13th season, is at the top of the

tight end depth chart. But going into the 2025 season, it appears that the depth behind him and Noah Grey is up for grabs.

A rookie undrafted free agent from Clemson, Jake Briningstool is a name that stands out in the tight end competition. Over his NFL

career, Robert Tonyan has shown flashes of skill at different times. However, in recent seasons, Tonyan has not been as consistent.

Next up is Jared Wiley. The second season of Wiley’s career will begin in 2025. He was selected by the Chiefs in the fourth round of the

2024 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs will have many key roster decisions to make in the next month and a half. One of those positions worth

monitoring is tight end. Of course, superstar Travis Kelce is atop the depth chart at tight end, entering his 13th career season.

However, the depth behind him and Noah Gray is seemingly up for grabs entering the 2025 season.

Jake Briningstool is an intriguing name in the tight end battle as a rookie undrafted free agent out of Clemson. Robert Tonyan has

been able to flash in various points throughout his NFL career. Though, Tonyan has not been as much of a mainstay in the last few

seasons. Then, there is Jared Wiley. Wiley will be entering his second career season in 2025. The Chiefs used a fourth-round pick on

him in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Does Wiley have any danger of not making the team already? Even though it is still early in his career, the TCU product may have to

scratch and claw more than anticipated to make the Week 1 roster.

Competition for tight end depth will be hard-fought

The competition for the TE3 berth is fierce, to put it simply. In the past, Kansas City has been prepared to keep more than three tight

ends on the roster for opening day. However, Wiley finds himself in a somewhat unpleasant situation. Over the course of seven games

last season, he received a few select snaps. He only managed to haul in one pass. Additionally, Wiley’s blocking was far from flawless

during the demands of his rookie season. In addition to the ongoing work, Wiley tore his ACL during practice in the middle of the

season.

Without those added reps late in the campaign, Wiley is essentially back to or near square one once again. Will he even be fully healthy

to run routes and do drills in training camp? If so, getting back to feeling fully comfortable is a twisted challenge in addition to fighting

for a roster spot.

What Chiefs will be looking for from additional tight ends

Prior to his untimely injury, Jared Wiley was incredibly raw in the Chiefs offence. This raises more questions than it does answers

about how he fits into the group going into 2025. It is one thing to be able to participate in the offence. Special teams and hard effort in

the run game, however, might earn you even a small spot on the tight end depth chart for Kansas City. In those areas of the game, you

may contend that Tonyan or Briningstool provide higher ceilings than Wiley.

We’ll start by seeing whether those extra names organically fit into the playbook or boost up the offence. Demonstrating his ability to

manage numerous tasks will be crucial if Wiley is to secure a spot on the opening day roster. During his time in college, he moved

about the offensive formation. During his time in college, Wiley excelled at both the rapid passing and vertical passing games. If

Kansas City thinks he can outperform Tonyan or Briningstool there, only time will tell. But for now, it seems like anyone can compete

for the Chiefs’ tight end depth spots. To return to his previous level of performance, Jared Wiley will need to put in even more effort.
