Brian Kerr has said that while his colleagues were in Spain, Richard King visited St Mirren’s Ralston training facility.
The Jamaican international has arrived in Scotland prepared to start working for his new team after serving his nation at the Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States.
The highly regarded defender was signed by the Buddies on a two-year contract from the Jamaican Premier League’s Cavalier FC.
This summer, manager Stephen Robinson renewed his interest in King, a player he had been attempting to acquire during the January transfer window.
Richard Taylor, who joined Bolton Wanderers of Sky Bet League One, will be replaced by the 23-year-old.
However, Saints assistant manager Kerr wants to calm any expectations that the new hire would be thrust into games right away and doesn’t want to hurry him into anything.
He told the Paisley Daily Express, “Richard missed Spain because he was supposed to arrive in the country last week.”
“He has a few passport-related issues, but they are minor ones that we’ll take care of this week. We’ll then discuss him throughout the course of the following two or three weeks.
We’re not at all worried about his level of fitness because he has clearly played a lot of games in recent weeks. It will just involve integrating him into our routines.
King is one of several recent additions to the team, and Kerr hinted that if current players and those coming up through the junior system don’t live up to expectations, more may follow.
“It might be possible to add one or two more. “Some of the questions must be answered by the players here first,” he stated.
Some of them responded to that during the performance versus Dumbarton. Some of the young guys there have also performed really well, therefore they are being offered chances.
“There are opportunities for these youngsters initially, and we’ll examine the following several weeks whether we think one or two more should be included.
“But the boys in the building must be given the chance to make a claim first and foremost.”
Along with the permanent captures of Roland Idowu and Killian Phillips, new additions Ryan Mullen, Jayden Richardson, and Liam Donnelly have also joined.
Despite not playing for the Rock, Conor McMenamin and new goalie Mullen were both tested during the team’s warm-weather training camp.
To give McMenamin the best chance of being ready for the upcoming season, he was placed in cold storage prior to the journey to Murcia.
Kerr said that as Mullen had only joined 24 hours prior, it was always the intention for him to play no part in the Dumbarton match.
He continued by saying: “He had a slight ache, nothing major.” Simply said, we didn’t want to take a chance on him so early in the season.
He hasn’t done a lot of work because it was still quite early. On Saturday, we learnt that it was more crucial that he receive a little more training.
In order to prepare him, Jamie Langfield, the goalkeeping coach, pushed him hard during the warm-up. We simply understood that he required a lot of effort and that he didn’t care too much about game time.
