Following their 6-0 preseason victory over Hitchin Town, the head coach of MK Dons commented.
There were many reasons to be pleased with MK Dons‘ 6-0 victory against Hitchin Town on Saturday, so Paul Warne was not going to be dismayed.
Dons got off to a strong start thanks to a hat-trick from Aaron Collins in only 12 minutes, with the three players only five minutes apart. Nathan Thompson and Jonathan Leko (2), who suffered long-term injuries last season, scored four, five and six goals in the second half at Top Field.
After losing 2-1 to St Mirren in Spain the week before, they played their first preseason match back in England. Warne claimed he was impressed by both the Bedfordshire result and many aspects of his team.
“I’m quite happy,” he declared. Performance indicators are more important to me than the scoreline. Occasionally, the boys pressed to regain possession of the ball when we attempted the proper actions and it failed to come off.
“I hope it will be a regular fixture and we can bring teams here in the future. It was a good, competitive game.” There were several entertaining moments of play, and we managed to get everyone through the allotted minutes. Actually, I had a nice day at work.
“As a league player and a non-league player, I’ve played these games, and sometimes it’s hard to get yourself up for it as the ‘bigger team,’ but the guys’ attitude was impeccable.” That truly thrilled me because I want us to work hard, pursue teamwork, and be modest.
For Dons, games suddenly come thick and fast. On Tuesday night, they play Brackley Town, and on Saturday, they have a split schedule that includes Wealdstone and Doncaster Rovers.
“I’d say it was the fun part, but as a manager it’s not,” Warne went on. Anxiety over the boys’ performance, if the information is clear, and what we might do better are constant concerns. That’s the pleasurable part as well as the difficult part.
These days, games come quickly, so we need to teach the guys as much game technique and athleticism as we can without hurting them.
“It comes down to performance metrics because we might put up a strong effort again on Tuesday and yet lose 1-0. Are we bold enough, are we pressing, are we supporting attacks? We are searching for those things during the preseason.
