Sheffield Wednesday looking into re-signing ex-Owls midfielder on free transfer

Sheffield Wednesday are looking into bringing Stuart Armstrong back to Hillsborough after his short-term stint with the Owls expired earlier this summer.

Armstrong joined the Owls in January following a brief stay with the MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps, and he made only six starts before being released at the end of the season.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri is under increasing pressure to address the club’s financial flow concerns, as Wednesday will be unable to pay transfer fees until at least 2027.

The 51-cap Scotland international made 214 appearances for Southampton, including 149 in the Premier League, following successful periods at Celtic and Dundee United, where he scored 49 goals during eight years north of the English border.

Stuart Armstrong emerges as the target for Sheffield Wednesday.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Sheffield Wednesday are eager to bring Armstrong back to S6, having been compelled to recruit only free agents.

Armstrong’s willingness to take a wage reduction is viewed as critical, but the opportunity to play a regular role in the second division next season and restore any ambitions of international football could be the deciding factor.

According to reports, players are expecting roughly £1.6 million in May and June, with some being paid before others – this could be a source of concern for Armstrong as he considers his next move.

Given his advanced age and lack of actual playing time in 2025, Armstrong may welcome a return to Hillsborough, given the Owls’ tight restrictions on the kind of players they can bring in.

Wrexham give opposition for Stuart Armstrong, but Sheffield Wednesday have the advantage.

The race for Armstrong’s signature is anything but clear. Wrexham, supported by high-profile owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is also looking for experienced Championship players to improve their recently promoted squad.

As a result, the Welsh club is reportedly interested in signing the attacking midfielder but has yet to make an official offer.

According to reports, any potential Sheffield Wednesday deal will be on less favourable terms than before, thus Wrexham has a good chance of offering better terms – if they ever do.

Wednesday’s best hope is to move swiftly and make an offer before their pre-season tour, and if they can settle outstanding wage and transfer arrears as soon as possible, they may be able to beat Wrexham to Armstrong’s re-signing.
