Borja Sainz bids City an emotional farewell after Porto move

Borja Sainz bids City an emotional farewell after Porto move.

Borja Sainz has left Norwich City after completing a move to FC Porto, describing it as a ‘significant chapter’ in his career.

The Spaniard’s £14.25 million transfer from Carrow Road to the 30-time Portuguese champions was formally confirmed on Sunday evening.

Sainz has signed a five-year contract at the Estadio do Dragao, with Norwich holding a 20% sell-on clause for any future transfers. The 24-year-old played 82 games for City, scoring 27 times.

The move ends the winger’s two-season career at Carrow Road, which began when City grabbed him on a free transfer from Turkish side Giresunspor after Sainz triggered a relegation release clause in his contract.

He scored 18 goals in the Championship during the 2024/25 season, second only to Leeds United’s Joel Piroe.

Sainz said an emotional farewell to City on his official Instagram account, thanking the club and its fans for their support over his two years at Carrow Road.

“Hi, Canaries. It’s time to say goodbye and conclude a very crucial chapter in my career.

I depart feeling glad for the opportunity to compete and enjoy football in England, especially while wearing this shirt.

“Thank you to the club for believing in me and supporting me every step of the road, to the coaching staff and my teammates for their daily expectations, and to everyone who works behind the scenes.

“And, of course, to the supporters, whose support at Carrow Road and from afar made each match memorable.

I leave feeling proud because I gave it my all.

“I’m leaving with wonderful memories, friendships, and experience that will help me face the challenges ahead. Thank you, everyone. I wish you the best in the future. “Borja Sainz.”
