Sunderland make Anthony Patterson U-turn after Sam Johnstone’s move.

According to their former senior scout, Sunderland has changed their mind about selling Anthony Patterson this summer.

Regis Le Bris is open to retaining the 25-year-old in the North East, according to an exclusive interview with Football Insider from Mick Brown, who was once the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn and is still highly well-connected at his former teams.

The Black Cats had previously expected to sign a guaranteed first-choice goalkeeper, which would have allowed Patterson to go amid interest from clubs such as Southampton.

However, the arrival of Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is likely to create competition for the number one shirt between their two choices.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider on July 8 that Sunderland has entered the battle to recruit Johnstone and is willing to compete with Leeds for his signature.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider that Sunderland will consider bids for Patterson if they can find a new goalkeeper while focusing on acquiring important targets.
