Round-up: Huddersfield Town land another third-tier promotion winner – one in, one out at York City

After joining on a free transfer, the 29-year-old, who was capped four times by the USA earlier in his career, signed a three-year

contract with the League One team. He is the seventh addition to the team in a busy summer transfer window.

At the conclusion of the previous season, the Californian player left Stoke.

Gooch, who was bought by former Sunderland manager Alex Neil late in the 2023 summer transfer window, spent two seasons in the

Potteries.

The versatile player played right-back, left-back, right wing, left flank, and even as a No. 10 during his 31 games in Staffordshire under

four different managers. He played 53 games for Stoke overall.

From 2015 to 2023, Gooch made 246 senior appearances for the Black Cats after making his mark on Wearside, where he progressed

through the junior system.

It included stints in League One, the Premier League, and the Championship. The utility man, who was born in Santa Cruz, was a

reliable player under a number of coaches.

Town chief Lee Grant said: “Lynden is another important addition to the squad, bringing us quality and strong competition at right-

back.

“Despite offers to stay in the Championship, he has bought in to our vision and ambition, and I’m looking forward to seeing him

contribute to our collective goals.

“As another player who understands what it’s like to be promoted from this league and the effort and commitment it takes to get there,

his experience will be invaluable to the team both on and off the pitch.”

“I had time to assess my options this summer and really think about where I wanted the next step of my career to be, and after

speaking to Lee Grant, I had no doubt that Huddersfield Town was the right club to join,” Gooch, who previously played for Doncaster

Rovers on loan in Yorkshire and has since joined Town at their training camp in Austria, continued.

“I know that everyone at the club will be fighting for that feeling because I’ve been promoted from this league before and I want to experience it again.”

In order to make room for a winger to move permanently in the opposite way, former Doncaster Rovers left-back Cameron John has

left York City on a season-long loan.

With forward Joe Grey joining the Minstermen permanently, John, who began his career at Wolves, has joined Conference rivals

Hartlepool United for the 2025–2026 season.

Grey has already made 155 league appearances for the Teesside club at the age of 22.

Grey also made 45 Football League appearances with Pools, who were most recently in League Two from 2021 to 2023, after

graduating from their development system.

Last season, John, 25, was a mainstay in his first season at the Community Stadium. He scored in the final two games of the season

and made 33 league appearances as the Minstermen finished second in the standings.
