Reading boss busts ‘perception’ of big-spending and reveals recruitment priority

Reading boss Noel Hunt is keen to bust the ‘perception’ that the Royals are ‘throwing money’ around this transfer window.

After more than five years, the Royals are no longer subject to a transfer embargo and may freely move in the market.

Only five signings have been made thus far, three of which are on temporary contracts, and the outlook for the next month and a half remains uncertain.

New owner Rob Couhig has openly stated that the window has the “potential to be spectacular,” although Hunt has indicated that the club is unable to compete with some teams giving players up to £15,000 per week.

With two trialists appearing in the last week and a thriving Academy, the squad has the potential to be expanded. However, Hunt has confessed that his emphasis is the forward and wide areas, which he believes are ‘young’.

However, he is careful to temper expectations that the club will spend heavily under their new owner, believing the budget will be even lower than previous season.

“We are looking at two or three wide players,” the manager stated during a press conference. “We understand that we are quite young in that position. The newcomers performed admirably, but we would want to see more experience. We’ve spoken with three or four people, and hopefully we’ll be able to get something done next week. A handful of those coming in would be a huge plus.

“For the squad, we’re looking at adding another six guys, possibly seven if necessary, but it’s where we’re authorized to do so under the pay structure to ensure we’re on track. We’re out of the embargo, but we realize there’s still more stabilizing work to be done before we can go ahead and walk on it. With the EFL, we’re following the regulations but trying to get the most out of the money we can.”

Hunt went on to discuss the Royals’ transfer market and financial power, saying, “I think there is a perception of this football club among certain young players that we are throwing big money here–we’re not.” The budget is identical to last year’s; it must be in order to meet EFL requirements. If not, it’s a little less, but that’s okay since we had some come out, so we’ll move things around and tighten up the squad.

“With the young men, 21 and 22, you must earn the right to receive the money that the Lewis Wings or other major players see pouring in. They earned the right and persevered throughout their professions to be where they are today. We don’t spend like the top clubs at our level; that isn’t where we are right now. We want people who want to come here and earn the right to work and play, with the money coming after. Don’t worry about money.

“I tell these individuals that the next deal won’t make them a millionaire, but the one following that will if they execute it correctly. It’s critical that you receive game time and do what you’re meant to do; support yourself and come here, be one of us, and work for the team.”

Reading has until September 1 to complete their job in the window, while the League One season begins on August 2.

As expected, the club is combing the globe for new recruits.

“Our days have been eight to eight. We’re researching players from the United States, Germany, and Spain in order to get the most bang for our buck. Right now, the money has gone crazy. Boys in League One earn eight, ten, twelve, and fifteen grand each week. We’re not competing with that right now. We need to re-batten our hatches and ensure that we have the necessary personnel and people in place to propel us ahead.”
