Charlton Athletic £14m squad value v QPR, Millwall and Championship rivals post summer shopping spree.

Nathan Jones has once again overseen a frantic start to summer transfer business as he strives to have a full squad for the start of the championship season.

Charlton Athletic has had an impressive summer transfer window thus far as the London club prepares for a return to the Championship following their League One play-off victory last season.

Nathan Jones made it clear a year ago that he wanted business done early so that he could spend more time working with newcomers in pre-season, and that appears to be the case again this season.

The Welshman has overseen a shopping spree at former club Luton Town in recent weeks, with three former Hatters players joining The Valley. Perhaps the most notable of those coups is that of custodian Thomas Kaminski, who was a standout as the team was relegated to the third tier last season.

The 32-year-old was a regular in the Premier League under Rob Edwards in 2023/24.

Full-back Amari’i Bell and Centre-back Reece Burke has also arrived to strengthen the defence. Tanto Olafoe has arrived from Stockport County, and Sonny Carey has joined to add Championship experience to midfield.

Joe Rankin-Costello has also been signed from Blackburn Rovers, with Blackpool winger Rob Apter set to join for £2 million, according to Football Insider. Jones said after the pre-season win over Dartford:

“We need to add some quality to how we play and what we do. We’ve got a really good foundation with what we’ve brought in, we’ve got that strength and we’ve added a little more quality, but we still want that real top-end quality, and that’s what we’re working to bring in.

” With a long time left in the transfer window, the statistics on Transfermarkt show that the majority of Championship teams now have a lower squad value than on May 15. That’s largely down to free agent departures and a lack of incomings as of yet.
