Sean Johnson posts 108th shutout as Toronto FC blank San Diego FC

Toronto FC blanks San Diego FC as Sean Johnson records his 108th shutout.

Toronto FC defeated host San Diego FC 1-0 on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Theo Corbeanu on a penalty kick in the first half and Sean Johnson’s 108th career shutout. Toronto FC (5-11-6, 21 points) shut off San Diego FC’s renowned offence thanks to a goal by Corbeanu in the 20th minute. This season, the Reds are now 3-0-2 versus opponents in the Western Conference.

Johnson’s sixth shutout of the season required just one save. He has the fourth-highest career total in MLS history. Despite the slow loss, San Diego FC (13-7-3, 42 points) is still leading the Western Conference. Only four nights after letting Atlanta United score in the eleventh minute of second-half stoppage time for a frustrating 1-1 draw, Toronto carefully guarded its late one-goal advantage.

FC San Diego lost 6-3-3 at home despite Pablo Sisniega’s lone save. With all of its shots in the second half, San Diego outshot Toronto 7–4 and dominated the ball for two thirds of the game. San Diego scored one goal, while the Reds scored two.

With 46 goals, San Diego FC leads the MLS, but the team failed to score in the first half and didn’t put a shot on goal until the 71st minute, when Johnson denied Chucky Lozano’s right-footed attempt.

This was San Diego FC’s first game since they lost to Milan Iloski, who scored a lot of goals, earlier this week. Due to the inability of both parties to agree on contractual terms, Iloski’s loan was amicably ended on Tuesday. Iloski finished second on the team with ten goals. The fact that Lozano, one of the team’s three All-Stars, didn’t join the game until the 60th minute may also have contributed to the sluggish attacking effort.

In the 86th minute, Lozano had a close-range chance, but Toronto defender Alonso Coello stopped his left-footed attempt. After that, the Reds improved to 2-4-2 over their last eight games and avoided any late-game controversy. In the 17th minute, Franco Negri of San Diego booted Corbeanu in the right knee, causing him to fall into the box.

Replay authorities signalled for a review after determining that Corbeanu had been fouled, even though no foul had been called at the time. In the 20th minute, he stood at the exact moment and scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season with a right-footed boot into the upper right corner of the net.
