Sky Sports pundit reacts to big Sheffield United transfer news involving Aston Villa’s Louie Barry

As Louie Barry nears a loan move from Aston Villa to Sheffield United, Sky Sports analyst and former Aston Villa midfielder Lee

Hendrie thinks the player has a “massive” chance to make a name for himself in the Championship.

After his proposed deal to join Championship rivals Hull City fell through due to the Tigers’ inability to meet a £3.5 million deal with

Unai Emery’s team before being placed under a three-window transfer embargo, Villa forward Barry is reportedly in “advanced talks”

to move to Bramall Lane on a season-long loan.

Naturally, Barry played just four games at Hull during the second part of the 2024–25 Championship season while on loan under

now-Blades head coach Ruben Selles due to a nasty hamstring injury. After a spectacular loan spell in League One with Stockport

County, where he scored 16 goals in just 24 games prior to January to spark interest around the Championship, his progress was

stalled at the MKM Stadium.

But after being named as Chris Wilder’s replacement in the red-and-white quarters of the Steel City, Selles has remained interested in

Barry. The well-liked Yorkshireman was relieved of his duties following United’s heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the May play-

off final.

Having confirmed last week that the club will target loan and free agent acquisitions after Football League World exclusively revealed

that immediate transfer policy ahead of the 25/26 season, the Spaniard, who was himself controversially fired by Hull despite keeping

the East Yorkshire team in the Championship on the last day of the season, will now be looking to lead the Blades back to the promised

land with Barry at the forefront of those ambitions.

Barry has the ability to succeed at a top-tier Championship team with hopes of making it to the Premier League, according to Hendrie,

who spoke exclusively to FLW. He described this as a “absolutely massive” opportunity for the 22-year-old.

Barry can play centrally or even behind the striker in the number 10 position, however he is most comfortable on the left of a front

three. Hendrie praised Barry’s versatility in his position and ability to score goals as he gets closer to finalising his move to Sheffield

United.

“Louie Barry, it looks like he’s Sheffield United-bound on a season-long loan,” Hendrie stated to FLW.

“I genuinely believe he has what it takes to be a member of a premier Championship club.

“After observing his development, I believe Sheffield United will be a perfect fit for him. In addition to scoring goals and

having a lot of enthusiasm and speed, he can play a variety of positions, including number ten, center-forward, and out

wide.

“I believe he’s holding out for a major breakthrough in the Championship.

“It didn’t quite happen for him at Hull because he had that injury, but knowing Louie Barry, he will be champing at the bit

and the opportunity to go to a club like Sheffield United is absolutely massive for him.”

Aston Villa’s Louie Barry will address a key area for Sheffield United and Ruben Selles

It’s no secret that Sheffield United need to bolster the top-end of the pitch if they are to avenge last season’s heartbreak at

failing to achieve promotion and falling at the final hurdle after winning no less than 92 points.

Gus Hamer, who won the Championship’s Player of the Year Award and may leave the Blades this summer due to interest

elsewhere, will be moved back into central midfield after playing freely on the left side of attack under Wilder last season,

according to Selles, which means that new players are needed out wide.

Naturally, Barry will be among them, which will be a significant and comforting boost for Selles, who currently only has the

unproven trio of Jefferson Caceres, Christian Nwachukwu, and Ehije Ukaki—all of whom were hired as part of Steve Rosen

and Helmy Eltoukhy’s AI-driven hiring policy—as wide-ranging options.

It will be hoped that Barry is the first of a series of attacking reinforcements in the weeks to come at Bramall Lane ahead of

the season opener at home to last season’s play-off semi-finalists Bristol City on August 9.
