Fabrizio Romano: Sunderland now make direct approach to sign “fantastic” maestro alongside Xhaka

Sunderland have now made a “direct approach” to recruit a “fantastic” midfielder, according to Fabrizio Romano, who has also initiated talks with Granit Xhaka in recent days.

Black Cats looking to sign new midfielders

The Black Cats have already signed Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra this summer, while Enzo Le Fee has made his stay at the Stadium of Light permanent, so Regis Le Bris appears to be well-stocked in central midfield.

However, the manager is well aware of how difficult it will be to stay in the Premier League next season, and he is confident that adding another central midfielder will help his team’s survival chances.

It may also be good to bring in players with Premier League experience, and Xhaka fits the bill, having spent several years at Arsenal, and talks over a move for the 32-year-old have now begun.

However, the former Arsenal man is not Le Bris’ sole objective in that area of the pitch, as Romano recently revealed on X that Sunderland has made a “direct approach” to the agent of Napoli midfielder Frank Zambo-Anguissa.

The Black Cats are still “working on” a deal for Xhaka, but Zambo-Anguissa has also emerged as a potential target, though it may be difficult to tempt him away from Napoli, since the Italian club has already offered him a new contract.

As things stand, the 29-year-old’s contract includes a £38 million release clause, implying that the newly promoted club may have to pay heavily if a deal is to be completed.

“Fantastic” Anguissa would be coup for Sunderland

It is doubtful that Sunderland will be able to get the Cameroon international, considering that Napoli is “confident” he will sign a new contract, but if they are able to do so, it would be a huge coup.
The 29-year-old played a key part for the Serie A champions in their 2024-25 title-winning season, appearing in 35 league games and scoring six goals and four assists.

Former Napoli loanee Philip Billing was likewise thrilled with his ex-teammate during his time in Italy, praising him as “fantastic”. Speaking about the Cameroon international and Scott McTominay, the Bournemouth player added: “I stick to my own playing style while also trying to learn from them.

“They are both incredible, great profiles both physically and technically. They run a lot and also score goals.”

That said, Xhaka may be a more attainable target, and it is an added bonus that the Swiss midfielder already has Premier League experience.
