Tottenham Hotspur chief looking to continue Reading FC run

On Saturday, Thomas Frank, the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, will take the dugout for the first time when his team travels to Reading for a preseason match.

With Spurs visiting the city for the first time since 2013, the game is almost sold out, with many people wanting to get a first look at the Europa League winners under Dane Frank.

Frank is familiar with the SCL Stadium, having served as Brentford’s manager for seven years and as a coach for two years prior to moving across London.

His first journey to Berkshire in the hot seat drew close to 17,000 spectators, with the Royals defeating the Bees 2-1 to almost guarantee their place in the second division.

The West London team, which finished third in 2019–20, defeated Fulham in the play-off final after completing the double over Reading, winning 3-0 away.

Promotion would come after, but in 2020–21, Brentford would defeat promotion-chasing Reading twice.

A 3-1 victory at the SCL Stadium ended a run of seven matches unbeaten for Veljko Paunovic’s side, this coming despite Lucas Joao giving the hosts as deserved lead.

Goals from Ivan Toney and Jay Dasilva turned the tie on its head and put the visitors clear at the top of the table.

Reading would finish seventh in May even though they finished the season in the top six. Under the Wembley arch, Brentford would triumph over Swansea City to advance to the Premier League, where they are still today.

Even less amazing is the Royals’ road record versus Frank, as they have lost both visits and the previous four matches combined.

On Saturday, Frank will try to continue his winning streak in Berkshire, but more significantly, he will begin laying the foundation for a successful transition from the well-liked Ange Postecoglou.

Dominic Solanke, a Reading native who has scored goals for Bournemouth on a regular basis over the years, may play.

Despite being up in the town, the England international advanced through Chelsea’s levels to earn his spot as a full England international.
