Middlesbrough keen on free agent after Sheffield Wednesday exit along with Wrexham

According to the Daily Mail, Middlesbrough is interested in Michael Smith after he left Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham.

Middlesbrough have been linked with a deal for the striker this summer. Boro are gearing up for another year in the Championship.

Smith, 33, has parted ways with Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent. He will now evaluate his options as a free agent.

In the most recent update on his predicament, the Daily Mail claims Rob Edwards is eager to lure him to the Riverside Stadium. However, Wrexham have been mentioned as a possible suitor. Meanwhile, The Star recently reported that Blackpool and MK Dons are fans as well.

Don Goodman praised the player earlier this year, telling Football League World: “He’s a bit of a throwback in his physicality as a number nine, in the sense that he’s a powerhouse in the air, gets on the end of crosses, messes defenders around, and he’s got eight goals and four assists in just 12 starts.”

“Now I know a large part of those goal involvements were him coming off the bench, and quite frankly at the age of 33 I think that’s why I’d probably be keeping him if I was Sheffield Wednesday.”

Michael Smith is a target for Middlesbrough following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday Middlesbrough could see Smith as a way to improve their attacking options. Boro are looking for new faces in the coming weeks.

The North East-born player would provide additional competition and depth at the top of the pitch. He would also provide experience to their ranks.

Smith joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2022 and helped them earn promotion from League One inside his first year. He scored 33 goals in 127 games with the Owls, eight of which came during the previous season.

Before to Hillsborough, he played for Rotherham United, where he scored 61 goals in 210 appearances. In addition, the forward has previously played for Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town, and Portsmouth.

What happens now that Michael Smith has left Sheffield Wednesday?

Middlesbrough are in contention, but they will encounter competition from elsewhere. Boro may need to divert attention away from Wrexham, Blackpool, and MK Dons in this pursuit.

Edwards will be eager to put his own imprint on his newly acquired squad throughout this window. The former Luton Town player was named as Michael Carrick’s replacement last month.

Sheffield Wednesday will have to find a replacement up front. The Owls are currently dealing with some off-the-field concerns, which is not ideal.
