One star could still play for Nuno Espirito Santo in the Forest XI that Steve Cooper selected for the 2022 season opener.

In order to be ready for a season in Europe, Nottingham Forest opened their 2025 preseason campaign with a 0-0 tie at Chesterfield.

Even though Forest has just returned to the Premier League for three seasons, the football team has already seen significant alteration.

After being promoted to the Premier League, Steve Cooper signed 23 players, including Morgan Gibbs-White, Dean Henderson, and Neco Williams.

With all five loan players departing and Lewis Grabban and Brice Samba going on, the former Forest head coach was dealt a very tough hand ahead of his first season in the top division.

Because of this, a preseason friendly against Coventry in Spain made the squad sheet appear both exciting and a little intimidating for what lay ahead.

Nottingham Forest’s lineup for the match against Coventry During a training camp in Spain, Nottingham Forest played their first Premier League match against Coventry.

The Pinatar Arena, where many clubs hold their preseason games, served as the venue for the match.

Forest selected the venue for their preseason tour in advance of the 2022–2023 season.

Cooper’s starting lineup did include several young players, promotion winners, and new recruits.

The first half starting lineup was as follows: Dean Henderson, Joe Worrall, Steve Cook, Moussa Niakhate; Giulian Biancone, Ryan Yates, Jack Colback, Nicholas Ioannou; Joe Lolley; Lyle Taylor, Taiwo Awoniyi; Jordan Smith; Fin Back, Loic Mbe Soh, Jonathan Panzo, Aaron Donnelly; Cafu, Braian Ojeda; Xande Silva, Oli Hammond, Alex Mighten;

Nuno da Costa Forest lost 3-1 to the Championship rivals, but Biancone scored the team’s first goal.

Ryan Yates, the only player from the team still present at the City Ground today, is the lone prominent name in the lineup.

In addition to continuing to play for Forest, Yates has been promoted to captain after three seasons, and Espirito Santo is obviously a huge fan.

In 2025–2026, Yates will play a part for Forest.

Last season, the midfield player wasn’t always regarded as the top pick, but in 2025–2026, that might change.

There will be extra games because Forest will be playing in Europe for the first time in thirty years.
