Alex Mowatt’s ‘got to be’ target for West Brom – and is buzzing at ‘confidence man’s’ return

Midfielder Alex Mowatt highlighted Albion’s promotion goals this season, and believes something fantastic is emerging under Ryan Mason.

Mason, Albion’s new head coach in his first permanent senior leadership job, has had a huge impact on the squad. The seasoned Mowatt, 30, has expressed amazement at the former Spurs coach’s leadership, and it is believed he has been positively received by the entire group.

As a result, Mowatt believes something positive is brewing at The Hawthorns, and that players share fans’ optimism as they prepare to mount another top-six campaign and halt a run of five consecutive Championship seasons. When asked about his promotion intentions, Mowatt replied, “Yeah, I think so; it has to be.”

“West Brom are a massive club. We want to be at the top of the table. “We need to get off to a good start this season. We missed out last season, but we want to be there next season.”

The midfielder added of Mason’s optimism: “That’s what it feels like for us – a young, energetic manager with a specific way he wants to play.”

“This is exciting. This is a wonderful time for us. I think the fans should be as delighted as they are.” Mowatt also stated that he and the squad are “buzzing” now that winger Mikey Johnston has returned to Mason’s squad after a sensational deal to Brazil’s Flamengo fell through.

Johnston was in talks for a £5 million move to Rio de Janeiro, but the buying club backed out due to a hostile fan response. “First and foremost, I’m thrilled that Mikey has returned,” Mowatt continued. “He’s an excellent player and one of my closest teammates. So I’m glad he’s returned.

“But I believe as long as he is a West Brom player, he will always give his all.

“I believe he will always excite fans. So we’re excited that he’s here, and hopefully he remains.” “I remind him of that all the time as well!” The midfielder laughed when Johnston’s goal total of three from previous season was revealed. “I believe Mikey is a high-confidence player.

“When he first came on loan, he had so much confidence. Every shot went in. “It went very well for him.” I’m hopeful he can get off to a good start this season, find his form, and gain confidence.
