Colchester United boss Danny Cowley on improved pitch
According to Danny Cowley, Colchester United could have a “real advantage” in League Two this season thanks to
their much-improved field.
After the pitch at JobServe Community Stadium proved to be especially problematic during the 2024–25 season,
especially in the latter months of the season, the U’s have made a considerable investment in summer work in recent
weeks.
Last month, Colchester revealed that they had reached an agreement with Ipswich Town that would allow the Suffolk
club’s under-21 and recently promoted women’s first team to play home games there for the 2025–2026 and 2026–
2027 seasons.
Colchester United saw off League One competition for ‘exciting’ signing
Colchester’s head groundsman Brad Jefferies has been working hard on the surface all summer.
U’s fans can get a close-up glimpse of the new ‘stitch pitch’ surface when they attend the club’s annual Open Day on
Sunday and boss Cowley says having a good home pitch to play is crucial.
Cowley said: “We’re hoping the pitch will be much better this year – certainly, the early signs suggest it’s going to be,
which I think is super exciting for us.
“It always felt at home last year like we not only outplay the opposition but also outplay the pitch, so congratulations
to Brad [Jefferies] and the groundstaff and also the deal that Robbie [Cowling] did with Ipswich to allow us to get a
stitch pitch, which gives us much better foundations.
The pitch will be far more resilient and prepared to handle a few more games, despite that.
“We’ll have a good surface in the end, which will give us a real advantage as the protagonist, as you often are at
home, so it’s a great deal for us.”
The JobServe Community Stadium will host Colchester United’s yearly Open Day on Sunday.
The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature a Q&A session with U’s chairman Robbie Cowling and
manager Danny Cowley, among other things.
In addition, there will be a Premier League Kicks training session, a player signing session, a Mascot Race, and an
opportunity for kids to train with the pros.
Danny Cowley, Nicky Cowley, and the first team team are expected to attend the well-attended event, which is
expected to draw hundreds of people to the location
Colchester will play a behind-closed-door match against Championship team Oxford United tomorrow as part of
their ongoing preparations for the upcoming League Two season.
