Rangers considering “ambitious” Ibrox swoop for Dessers upgrade

Rangers are thinking about making a “ambitious” Ibrox raid for Dessers’ renovation.

Although the summer transfer window is still well over a month away, it is unclear if Cyriel Dessers will still be a member of Glasgow Rangers when it closes.

The Nigerian international has been linked to a move to Greek team AEK Athens, and Russell Martin said that the club turned down an approach from a club earlier this month. In his two seasons in the Scottish Premiership, the 30-year-old striker has scored 34 goals for the Light Blues, but he has also missed an incredible 47 “big chances” during that time. Rangers will require a new striker to maybe lead the charge if Dessers leaves Ibrox this summer, whether to join AEK Athens or another team.
The Scottish powerhouses are apparently searching for another seasoned number nine signing, even though the Nigerian forward, Danilo, and Hamza Igamane are still with the team. Luuk De Jong, a centre forward who left PSV at the end of last month, is out of contract and Rangers are reportedly considering making a move to sign him, according to Football Insider.

As they assess the type of contract they would be ready to offer the free agent, the report asserts that the Gers are seriously “considering” the potential of a deal for the 34-year-old attacker. Scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Light Blues would be acquiring a “proven player,” making it a “ambitious” deal.

The Premiership team is only now exploring a transfer, so it is unclear if they will actually move forward with a deal for the striker. Martin and Kevin Thelwell need to advocate for a trade to happen if Rangers have the chance to sign De Jong on a one- or two-year contract to expand their center-forward options, as he would be an improvement over Dessers.

De Jong has scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 16 Champions League qualifiers during his career, so his European experience could be especially helpful to Rangers if they advance past Panathinaikos in their second qualifying round. He would not be eligible to sign with them in the near future.

Dessers, meanwhile, has three goals in his eight Champions League qualifying appearances, which raises the possibility that the Dutchman will help Rangers advance to the league stage. De Jong would likely provide Martin with more at the top end of the pitch at league level than the Nigerian forward, based on his performance for PSV in the Eredivisie over the previous two seasons.

De Jong(Eredivisie) Dessers(Premiership)
Appearances 65 70
Goals 43 34
Headed goals 14 6
Big chances created 34 10
Assists 23 6

Despite playing five fewer league games than Dessers, the 34-year-old scored nine more goals and provided 17 more assists, as shown in the table above. This shows the calibre of performance he is capable of in front of goal.

Given his productivity, it’s difficult to argue with former Dutch international and former PSV manager Mark Van Bommel’s assertion that the striker “always delivers” and that he is among the top three players in Europe at scoring headers. All things considered, De Jong has the ability to surpass Dessers as a goal scorer and goal creator at the league level. He also has more Champions League and qualifying experience, which could increase the team’s chances of advancing to the league stage.

Because he is an experienced striker with the ability to be an improvement over Dessers as a goal scorer, creator, Champions League performance, and aerial presence in the number nine position, Rangers should be working hard to get a deal for the former PSV star across the finish line.
