Despite the criticism that has plagued Mikel Arteta and Arsenal for the past three years, it appears that the Gunners have finally acquired a striker. Viktor Gyokeres, a Swede who is expected to arrive from Sporting CP in Portugal, is being considered as Arsenal’s next big-money acquisition.
As anticipated, if the transaction closes, it may be a huge step forward for Arsenal in their quest for their first Premier League championship since 2004. Many believed that Arsenal only needed to recruit a goal-hungry center-forward to put an end to their losing streak and reclaim their place at the top of English football.
Now that they seem to have landed one, everyone will be watching the pitch to see if Gyokeres is the missing component that many have claimed he is. However, the good news for supporters of Arteta and Arsenal is that they seem to have already resolved a Gyokeres issue that hasn’t yet arisen.
Furthermore, Kai Havertz wasn’t a bad striker per se; rather, he lacked the innovative edge Arsenal required to contend for the major titles. When Havertz was injured towards the conclusion of the previous season, Arsenal definitely missed him. The German proved to be more than valuable at times.
Havertz’s playing time will undoubtedly be reduced by Gyokeres’ arrival, but that doesn’t mean the 26-year-old won’t contribute to Arsenal. Havertz, on the other hand, may already be Arsenal’s ideal Gyokeres replacement.
It should maintain healthy rivalry between the two players in addition to ensuring Arteta doesn’t have to overwork Gyokeres and play him every minute. When Erling Haaland first joined Manchester City in 2022 as part of a hugely expensive transfer, Julian Alvarez, another free-scoring forward, was always pushing the striker.
Neither a Gyokeres who is injured nor one who has no competition for his starting position is of help to Arsenal. In addition, it’s doubtful that Havertz’s reputation will suffer significantly if Gyokeres arrives, considering Arteta’s prior faith in the former Chelsea player.
