Schumacher up front about Bolton Wanderers’ need for attacking reinforcements

STEVEN Schumacher is confident he can get at least one new striker in the building by the start of the League One season.

Despite bringing in seven new faces this summer, the Bolton manager still has a long shopping list, but bringing in attacking reinforcements is still a top priority. Sam Dalby’s hamstring injury will prevent him from playing in the curtain raiser against Stockport County, and Charlie Warren’s wrist injury has further limited his possibilities. Wanderers are looking for two goalkeepers (although Nathan Broome is still on trial), two forwards, and a replacement for George Thomason, who is likely to join Wrexham for £1.2 million.

The short-term priority is on offense, with Celtic’s Johnny Kenny and North Macedonian free agent David Toshevski being heavily connected. “We are going to have to get to work on this now,” Schumacher told The Bolton News. “It’s critical that we bring someone in next week to spend time with us before the season begins.

We need to get something sorted because we are extremely short. We’d want to attempt to sign two strikers before the season starts, and if we can only get one, we may have to wait a little longer, but we’re pretty short in that department. “Obviously, we need to strengthen the midfield now as well, so there’s one or two bits for us to do.” When asked if he thought any agreements were close to being completed, the head coach responded: “There are a lot of things going on right now; we’re just waiting for something to be confirmed and finalised.

We haven’t put all our eggs in one basket; we have a few things going on at the same time, so I’m certain we’ll be able to resolve one of them swiftly. “Quicker is better. Obviously, the more time we have to spend with players and work on them, the better it will be for our way of thinking.” On Saturday, Schumacher stated that an offer had been accepted for club captain Thomason. Schumacher declined to disclose the team involved following the 2-0 victory over Hibs, but did tell The Bolton News that he would be trying to add another midfielder before the season began.

But that’s clearly why George wasn’t here. We’ll probably go over that in greater detail next week.” It is believed that Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham have finalised the transfer, with the 24-year-old undergoing a medical over the weekend. Thomason played 169 appearances for Bolton and scored 13 goals, taking over the captaincy from Ricardo Santos last season. Wrexham had been on a pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand before playing their final game on Saturday in Wellington. The squad has now returned, clearing the way to announce Thomason’s move.
