Midfielder Richie Smallwood defines his role in new-look Rovers squad
Richie Smallwood believes his experience will be vital as Tranmere Rovers’ reshaped squad look to make their mark on League Two this season.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who arrived at Prenton Park this summer following the expiry of his contract at Bradford City, is no stranger to the demands of England’s fourth tier — and he’s ready to embrace a leadership role under new boss Andy Crosby.
“I’ve been around a bit now, and I know what this league takes,” said Smallwood. “It’s about consistency, hard work, and making sure the dressing room is united. That’s where I feel I can help this group.”
Smallwood made over 100 appearances during his time at Bradford, captaining the Bantams and playing a key part in their play-off campaigns. Prior to that, he enjoyed spells in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Rotherham United, where his combative style and professionalism earned widespread respect.
His move to Merseyside represents a fresh challenge — but one the former Hull City man is relishing.
“When I spoke to the manager, I got a really good feeling straight away,” Smallwood explained. “He talked about building a team with the right character, and that’s something I value. There’s a good mix here of younger lads with energy and older heads like myself, and that balance will be important.”
Andy Crosby, who took over from Nigel Adkins in the close season, has overseen significant changes to the Rovers squad, bringing in several new faces as the club look to bounce back from last term’s disappointing mid-table finish.
Smallwood says he’s been impressed by the standards Crosby is setting.
“The gaffer wants us to play on the front foot, be aggressive and take the game to teams,” he said. “We’ve worked hard in pre-season, and there’s a really positive feeling around the place. We know it won’t be easy, but I think we’ve got a squad capable of challenging.”
For Smallwood, leadership isn’t just about shouting on the pitch — it’s about setting the tone every day.
“I try to lead by example,” he said. “Whether that’s in training, in the gym, or on a matchday, I want the lads to know they can rely on me. Sometimes that’s a word of encouragement, sometimes it’s about standards — but always for the good of the team.”
With the League Two campaign fast approaching, Smallwood admits he’s eager to get started and help the club push towards the top end of the table.
“Promotion’s got to be the aim,” he added. “You can’t come into a club like Tranmere and think mid-table’s good enough. It’s a club with ambition and a fanbase that expects to be up there. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Smallwood and his new teammates continue their preparations this week, with Rovers set to kick off their League Two campaign at home to Morecambe on August 9.
