Alfie May drops ‘massive’ Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City comparison as ‘exciting’ verdict shared

In the summer transfer window, Huddersfield Town is serious about securing their automatic promotion hopes after

a disappointing 2024–25 season.

Many of the ten new players Town has added this summer are capable of competing in the Championship.

One example of Huddersfield’s ambition is the signing of former Sunderland right-back Lynden Gooch. Additionally,

Lee Grant has expanded his team to include players like Murray Wallace, Jack Whatmough, Ryan Ledson, and

Marcus Harness.

The players listed above have a tonne of second-tier football experience and will make up a fantastic League One

squad that ought to be fighting for promotion.

Alfie May, a clinical third-tier finisher who arrived for £1.3 million from Birmingham City, is the cherry on top.

Huddersfield has put together a formidable squad, concentrating primarily on midfield and defence additions to

create the framework for a team that will compete for promotion.

All teams, however, require a merciless goal scorer, and May’s transfer from Birmingham ensures goals in League

One.

In 248 third-tier games, the 32-year-old has scored 89 goals, including 16 for the Blues when they swept to the

championship last season.

After completing his transfer to the Terriers, May couldn’t ignore the ‘massive’ ambition they’re showing, comparing

it to the ‘positive feeling’ he experienced at Birmingham.

“It’s no secret that this is a club that I’ve come close to joining in the past, and I’m really pleased the opportunity has

come again to become a Town player,” May said via Huddersfield’s official website.

“Any player wants to feel like they belong to this enormous club with enormous goals. I know what can happen when

a team clicks with a manager and there is a positive vibe throughout the entire club because I was on a team that felt

that way last season.

Grant was also praised by the Englishman, who called him a “exciting” boss and acknowledged that he fits right in

with his style.

May continued, “I’ll do everything in my power to repay the faith the club has shown in me. My job is to work as hard

as possible and score goals.”

“Lee Grant is an exciting manager and the way he wants to play and attack feels like the right fit for me, so I can’t

wait to get going.”

May can fire Huddersfield Town to promotion

Huddersfield are stacked with forward options heading into the 2025/26 campaign, with May joining Freddie

Ladapo, Dion Charles, Joe Taylor, Bojan Radulovic and Rhys Healey in attack.

Unquestionably, May is the most clinical of the lot, having hit the 20-goal mark in a League One campaign on three

different occasions at Cheltenham Town and Charlton Athletic.

Alfie May’s goal record at Cheltenham and Charlton
2023/24 (Charlton Athletic – 23 goals)
2022/23 (Cheltenham Town – 20 goals)
2021/22 (Cheltenham Town – 23 goals)

May pledges to continue to perform magic in front of goal at Huddersfield, who will be hoping he can lead them back

into the Championship, despite the fact that he is now 32 and nearing the end of his playing days.
