Cairney and King contracts are such a massive boost

Jack Kelly discusses Tom Cairney and teenage prospect Josh King’s new Fulham deal in his latest essay for West London Sport.

The signing of new contracts by Josh King and Tom Cairney is fantastic news for Fulham.

I’m happy that Cairney will return for the upcoming season.

The Tom Cairney era had a lot of high points and highlights. It’s quite exclusive to Fulham. It is quite specific to football.

Ten years at one club is extremely uncommon, particularly in the modern era of football, where loyalty is almost nonexistent.

He’s not going to be playing every single game, but I’m sure he will still make a difference to the team when he comes on. And, obviously, there’s the off-the-pitch leadership skills as well – the advice he can give to young kids coming through.

From his first season at the club where Fulham were terrible, where Fulham looked like we could have been relegated to League One, then to a season where we got into the playoffs, and he was magnificent.

He scored against Reading in the playoffs, one of several crucial goals he scored. Then there was, of course, that picture of him in front of the Fulham supporters after we had lost in the play-off semifinal. It was moving.

He would score the game-winning goal against Aston Villa in the play-off final a year later. That, in my opinion, was the most significant event in Cairney’s career. At a sold-out Wembley Stadium, a stunning conclusion secured Fulham’s place in the Premier League.

The adventure has just been incredible. Three promotions—under Scott Parker, Slavisa Jokanovic, and Marco Silva, who scored on the night we won the league. He scored his 100th goal of the season as the opening goal in the 7-0 victory over Luton.

After that, you enter the Premier League, where you score goals against Leicester and Sunderland in the FA Cup, and you continue to contribute to the club by scoring the header against Brentford last season. We won the derby after he scored in that match. On and off the pitch, he is a wonderful person who embodies all the qualities you look for in a player: loyalty and talent.

What a journey it’s been. Ups, downs, last-minute goals, last-minute heartbreaks. Tom has been at the centre of it all. Playing with class, quality and loyalty. He is one of the Fulham greats.

Additionally, King’s re-signing is fantastic for the team. It’s crucial for a variety of reasons. He is the most talented young player I have ever seen at Fulham.

He will, in my opinion, be a regular member of the first team squad this season, which is a strong declaration of purpose.

This is it; the foundation for his development as a member of the first team has begun. It’s really thrilling. Naturally, the fear was that a four-year contract would prevent any team from snatching him up on a free transfer the following summer. I’m ecstatic. I haven’t witnessed the fanbase’s enthusiasm and spirit in a long time.

It’s because Fulham hasn’t signed a long-term contract with a promising young player in a long time. This week, Luc de Fougerolles signed a contract with Fulham, marking the team’s second long-term signing.

Fulham supporters have something to be quite excited about, but Marco Silva will control his minutes and use him wisely.
