Femi Azeez and Jack Howland scored in the first half against Johnnie Jackson’s League Two 2024-25 play-off winners, before Mihailo Ivanovic added the third after the break.
Azeez’s finish was low into the bottom corner. In their pre-season training camp in Spain, Millwall posted footage of Azeez working with first-team coach David Livermore and Neil on those types of finishes.
Neil was keen to praise his players for their appetite to put in the extra hard yards.
“I think that’s quite common for a lot of the lads, at one stage or another we’ll do individual drills for them that we feel is specific to their position,” Neil told NewsAtDen. “Whether that be the striker backing in, turning and trying to link the game or Femi combining and getting down the sides and scoring.
“It’s interesting, I know the drill you’re talking about, his goal is very similar to one of the drills, actually, he cuts back inside on his left foot and puts it in the far corner.
“All those little bits help. I’m not saying he’s scored the goal because we did a drill with him. But certainly our job is to try to improve the players, improve their understanding, improve their technique, and I think we’re making good progress in that sense.
“But that’s a 50/50 thing. We can’t do it ourselves, the lads need to have an appetite to learn and get better and improve and continue to train hard.
“They’ve certainly got that. As far as attitude and application is concerned we’ve got no problems whatsoever. The lads are excellent.”
Millwall hope to involve absentees such as Zak Sturge, Josh Coburn, Ra’ees Bangura-Williams, Billy Mitchell, Joe Bryan and Camiel Neghli in a training session on Tuesday before finalising their squad for the sold-out friendly against Bromley at Hayes Lane on Saturday.
