Thomas Clarkson Considered Switch To Rival Nation Before Ireland Debut

Out of the 18 Irish players called up to the Lions squad this summer, Thomas Clarkson would have been considered the most unexpected inclusion a year ago.

At the time, the prop had been mostly a supporting player for Leinster and had not come near to test honors. After a solid start to the season, he was called up to the Ireland squad and made his debut against Argentina in the autumn.

Clarkson would later prove to be an important contributor during the most recent Six Nations season.

Thomas Clarkson Considered Switch To Rival Nation Before Ireland Debut

While Thomas Clarkson presently appears to have a bright future in the colours of Ireland, there was a time in the recent past when he investigated other international alternatives.

Soon after signing a new deal with Leinster in 2023, Italy approached the player about switching international allegiances. The Wicklow native qualified for the Azzuri through his maternal grandparents, both of whom were born in the country.

Speaking to the media following his Lions debut yesterday, Clarkson admitted that he seriously considered the offer (h/t Irish Independent):

They came looking for me, but I’d just signed a new contract with Leinster. That was at the start of last season. It had gone quite well, so I kind of pushed it off.

I didn’t end it [the interest]. I thought it could be open at some point down the line. Obviously, this year it’s gone very well, so . . .

I only went in as a training panellist in November, so I wasn’t even really expecting to play in that. So to get a cap, I was delighted.

The Six Nations, I was happy enough with how it went, I wouldn’t have said I set the world alight or anything. So to then play well for Leinster at the end of the season and come in here, It’s pretty mad.

It would have been a huge decision to make.
Fortunately for Ireland, Clarkson has now secured his international future following a breakout season at both club and test level.
