Danny Röhl quote lays bare the transfer opportunity Sheffield Wednesday have squandered

Social media responses ranged from humorous Ballon D’Or suggestions to sincere analysis of a replacement

appearance, which allayed worries about the cost of a young attacker whose form had been a little erratic in his two-

year Owls career. Gers supporters were ecstatic.

The moans were practically audible in South Yorkshire. Gassama’s performance ceiling was as high as anyone else in

the division, making him a player far from the polished product. Well, leaner days were just that—leaner. He

occasionally lacked focus and was tactically ignorant. Towards the end of the season, there were some games where

the French youth cap was absent for extended periods of time. This was always the case with young athletes just

starting out in their careers.

But the truth is that, alongside Pierce Charles, the Mauritania-born youngster was the finest young talent

Hillsborough had contracted since who knows when. He was bright, tricky, exciting and at his best could dominate

huge parts of matches. The most alluring thing was his rawness and the sense that with time and coaching, that

performance ceiling could only get higher and higher.

With a year left on his contract – there’s been no suggestion the club held a year’s option on his contract – this

summer was always going to be a big one in the Gassama stakes. But for a widely-reported fee of £2.2m? It feels like

a robbery of Wednesday’s own making – or more accurately that of Dejphon Chansiri.

It’s one thing to push a club to the brink of financial ruin and force them to sell their more valuable assets—you can

put Caelen Cadamarteri and Anthony Musaba in this category—but it’s quite another to do it at a discount. As those

of us outside speculate about what a reasonable price would be for Gassama, I’m reminded of a press conference held

by Danny Röhl after the game in Plymouth, where the German likened him to Romain Esse, the nimble attacker with

a similar profile who was purchased by Crystal Palace a few weeks earlier for £14.5 million.

When questioned about one of Gassama’s most striking Wednesday excursions, Röhl smiled and said, “I will not

praise him too much at the moment.” But one Millwall player went on to play for a Premier League team. You’ll

understand who I mean. In my opinion, Gass has no boundaries when it comes to comparison.

With Gassama and Charles’s rising stature, there was optimism that Wednesday could develop a buy-to-sell policy

for young players and start implementing the kind of transfer strategy that other teams have found to be very

effective. A football team is at the centre of this sorry mess, and you can only feel sorry for those who are trying to

keep things together.

The 21-year-old has never lacked highlights reel moments, and many a career at a major club has begun with a false

dawn. However, it was yet another kick in the nether regions for those wearing Wednesday specs when he cut in

from wide and gave Rangers a 2-0 Champions League lead in front of a sold-out Ibrox.

Djeidi Gassama provided the Owls supporters and the team with an opportunity they had been waiting for for a long

time. Because of the shortcomings of the man whose name is above the door, that opportunity has been wasted.
