Danny Rohl has been expected to leave Sheffield Wednesday for the past week but still remains in the job, and EFL Analysis can shed some light on why that is.
Sheffield Wednesday’s summer has been anything but simple. While ongoing financial issues and subsequent transfer bans threaten to land the club in relegation trouble, the managerial situation in S6 is no less chaotic.
Danny Rohl had applied for several jobs this summer, including at Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Leicester City. However, with little result, he made a spectacular U-turn and returned to pre-season training with the Owls.
However, the German did not receive a positive return. Sheffield Wednesday players were upset with Rohl for neglecting them this summer, and they made it obvious that they no longer wanted to cooperate with him.
The latest on Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday
Last week, we reported that Sheffield Wednesday’s management had decided to part ways with Rohl after realising the relationships at Hillsborough could not be repaired, deeming the manager’s position ‘untenable’.
Our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, has just provided us with the most recent update on the situation, stating that complications have developed in getting Rohl out the door.
EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that the players and leadership are still determined to split ways with Rohl, but the cost of terminating his contract will make it difficult.
We were made to believe that Rohl’s assistant, Henrik Pedersen, would take over as his replacement. However, in a surprising twist, we understand Pedersen is keen for Rohl to stay at the club, which is contributing to the delay in making a final decision.
Rohl is also believed to be dissatisfied with the club’s release package plan. Rohl appears to prefer being paid off in a clean break over being forced to take gardening leave.
Danny Rohl could be the final big exit at Sheffield Wednesday this summer
Once the Danny Rohl situation is resolved, the Owls can begin to focus on the upcoming season. With a relegation struggle almost certainly in the horizon, Wednesday must now prepare for the 2025/26 season.
It is thought that the fire sale at Sheffield Wednesday has ended, which is good news. Still, the Owls have had a rough summer, losing Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Djeidi Gassama, and Anthony Musaba.
However, for the majority of Wednesday fans, securing a new contract with the famous Barry Bannan is critical. If he were to depart the club, it would be the final nail in the coffin for Dejphon Chansiri, given the present level of hostility from the fans.
