‘The opportunity’: Manager explains £9m man’s Birmingham City transfer, thinks deal benefits everyone

Because Brighton and Hove Albion, Premier League employers, were unlikely to turn down the defender’s

opportunity, Eiran Cashin thought Birmingham City was too good to pass up.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 player, 23, brings Birmingham City’s summer signing total to about ten.

Even though he won’t attract as much attention as Bright Osayi-Samuel, Tommy Doyle, Kyogo Furuhashi, or the

returning Demarai Grey, Eiran Cashin might end up being one of the window’s most clever yet unnoticed signings.

After establishing himself as one of the best young defenders in the Football League with Derby County, Cashin was

signed by Brighton & Hove Albion for £9 million.

After returning to The Rams on loan last season, the Mansfield-born goalie helped Derby avoid an immediate drop

back to the third division by serving as the team’s captain on occasion at the age of 22.

Now, after Birmingham City beat a host of Championship rivals to Eiran Cashin’s signature, his next task will be to

force his way into a backline breached only 31 times when Chris Davies’ Blues cruised to the League One title.

Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler explains Eiran Cashin’s Birmingham City transfer

During the first few weeks of preseason, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler was impressed by Cashin.

Hurzeler felt he could not deny Cashin the opportunity to further establish the reputation he established with Derby,

though, as he was surpassed in the hierarchy by Lewis Dunk, Jan Paul van Hecke, Adam Webster, and newcomers

Diego Copolla and Oliver Boscagli.

Hurzeler tells the official Brighton website, “Eiran has benefited from the time he’s been with us and had a strong

pre-season.” He has the chance to play frequently and keep improving thanks to this loan.

“As the season goes on, we will be closely monitoring him.”

Former Derby and Birmingham boss Wayne Rooney labelled Eiran Cashin an ‘outstanding’ talent during their time

together in the East Midlands.

A natural left-footer, he will likely take the place of Ben Davies at St Andrews. Fellow southpaw Davies is back at

Rangers following an impressive loan spell south of the border last season.

Unsurprisingly, ambitious, deep-pocketed Birmingham have pulled off some of the most eye-catching deals in the

Championship this summer.

Former Derby County star Cashin highlights Birmingham’s ambition

Tommy Doyle of Wolves rejected Premier League offers because of the “ambition” displayed by a team hoping to

make a comeback to the top level. Meanwhile, prodigal son Demarai Grey believed that this was the “ideal moment”

to rejoin the team where he began his career.

Former Celtic talisman Kyogo Furuhashi joins just months after joining Rennes for £10 million, Bright Osayi-Samuel

played Europa League games for Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce, and James Beadle was England’s starting custodian

during their Under-21 European Championship-winning campaign.

Everything that occurs in the club is visible to the public through the media, as is the direction and course of events.

It’s difficult not to believe that,” Cashin exclaims.

I know the owners, and the club has benefited much from the investment. I also know the manager and his style of

play, and the new players have all been excellent.
