Millwall’s five most expensive sales include 23-cap Ireland international and England underage star
In an attempt to build on their impressive Championship performance from the previous season, Millwall has been
comparatively quiet thus far this transfer window.
With Millwall on the verge of an unexpected play-off position thanks to Alex Neil, the Lions had a solid season finale
in 2024–2025.
They are predicted to be dark horses in the upcoming campaign after almost missing out. However, many people are
feeling a little let down by Millwall’s lack of summer additions thus far.
At the beginning of the transfer window, Zian Flemming left the team for Burnley of the Premier League, paying a
hefty £7 million to do so.
That transfer got EFL Analysis thinking about what the five most expensive sales Millwall have ever made are.
So, here is a list of exactly that, according to Transfermarkt.
5. Steve Morison – £2.75 million
The first player on our list is a Millwall fan favourite who has played for the Lions for seven seasons in two stints,
scoring 92 goals in 343 games.
After making an impression for Millwall the previous season, he moved to Norwich City, who were in the Premier
League, and during his first stint, he would demand the enormous sum of £2.75 million.
His two seasons at Carrow Road would be quite contrasted, with his first going perfectly as he scored 10 goals in 37
matches before only managing two the next campaign in 22 appearances.
Steve Morison would then struggle at Leeds United before returning to the Den in the summer of 2015 after leaving
for Norwich four years earlier.
4. Steven Reid – £3.1 million
After progressing through Millwall’s development system, Steven Reid played for the senior squad for six seasons
before departing to join Blackburn Rovers.
Throughout his career, the Republic of Ireland international would perform quite consistently, demonstrating his
skill in the English top division for both Rovers and West Brom.
Prior to the 2003–04 season, Blackburn acquired him from Millwall after he made 167 appearances for the London
team in League One and the Championship.
The versatile player, who could operate in midfield or defence, is now a coach, working for a number of high-profile
clubs in England, including Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.
3. George Saville – £6.8 million

summer of 2017.
During his one full season with the Den, George Saville was a worker in midfield who attracted the interest of other
Championship rivals.
He scored 10 goals in 45 appearances that campaign before Middlesbrough splashed the cash to sign the midfielder
for them as they looked to earn their way back to the Premier League.
Saville is currently contracted to Luton Town ahead of this campaign following the expiration of his deal, with his
second spell at Millwall proving not to be as fruitful.
2. Zian Flemming – £7 million
After joining Millwall, the Dutch attacker was a revelation, netting 15 goals in his debut season (2022–2023) and
proving to be a clinical asset to the team.
Although he only managed to score eight goals throughout the season, he still played a significant role for Millwall
the next year.
Last season he was on loan at Burnley, and he helped them to achieve promotion to the Premier League, with the
Clarets opting to sign him permanently after the successful spell.
Millwall will be pleased with the fee of £7 million they received, having brought him in for a reported £2.5 million
from Fortuna Sittard.
1. Romain Esse – £12.4 million
When Millwall transferred Romain Esse to Crystal Palace in January 2024 for £12.4 million, it was their most costly
transaction to date.
Esse has only made seven appearances for the Eagles, so he hasn’t established himself as a regular for Millwall’s
south London rivals.
During his two and a half seasons of playing senior football at the Den, he made an impression at Millwall, and
Palace saw his potential to become a star.
The club will be saddened to lose the 20-year-old to a rival, but they will find solace in the hefty price they got for
him. He came up through Millwall’s youth ranks.
