This Cardiff City factor will surely concern Alex Robertson & Yousef Salech – It’s not convincing

Alex Robertson and Yousef Salech, two of Cardiff City’s most valuable present assets, will be concerned about the fact that they are the only League One team without any new players this summer.

At the end of the 2024–25 season, Cardiff was demoted from the Championship in last place, although they don’t appear to be in the mood for a change in their first team lineup before they return to League One.

With just more than a week until the start of the new season, the Bluebirds are the only League One team without adding a single player this summer. This is concerning given how poorly they played in the final weeks of the previous campaign.

It may seem as though the team doesn’t even want a speedy return to the Championship, so this kind of lethargy at this point won’t be encouraging for the players who are still with the team.

Cardiff is one of the preseason favourites to return to the Championship the following season, and they should have the financial resources to put together the necessary equipment. However, despite the squad’s severe malfunctions from the previous campaign, they don’t seem to be interested in completely rebuilding it.

Cardiff City’s star duo Alex Robertson & Yousef Salech are too good for League One

Yousef Salech and Alex Robertson, both forwards, are now Cardiff’s most valued players. Salech was somewhat of a revelation for the team after joining them in the January transfer window from the Swedish club IK Sirius, scoring eight league goals in 20 games despite his team finishing at the bottom of the Championship. Robertson has been on the books at both Manchester United and Manchester City.

These are two players who have demonstrated that they can more than hold their own in the Championship, and it is therefore reasonable to assume that they won’t want to hang around in the third tier for very long. And the strength of their performances last season means that there would be no shortage of interest, were they to want a move away from the club.

In fact, the Championship is already seeing a lot of interest in Robertson’s signing. In addition to fans in the MLS and mainland Europe, it was reported just last month that 12 unidentified second-tier clubs, including Portsmouth, a former team, and one recently demoted from the Premier League, were interested in the technically skilled 22-year-old midfielder.

Robertson is now a Cardiff player, and a very important one at that, but you have to question whether the team’s lack of success in the transfer market will actually persuade him to stay, given that he still has plenty of time to complete a move outside of the Welsh capital.

Cardiff are standing still while others move decisively in the transfer market

Despite Cardiff City’s lack of activity in the transfer market, their competitors have undoubtedly done so. Luton has added eight players, while Plymouth Argyle has added ten, including Brendan Wiredu, Bradley Ibrahim, and Aribim Pepple, among the two other Championship clubs demoted at the end of the 2024–25 campaign.

They are not Cardiff’s only possible rivals for the upcoming campaign. Huddersfield and Bolton have been very active in the transfer market and might face a tougher challenge than they did in 2024–25, while Stockport came close last season, finishing third before losing in the play-offs. League One is likely to be much more competitive this season because Birmingham and Wrexham were promoted by a significant margin last season.

It is hard to imagine that players like Yousef Salech and Alex Robertson wouldn’t feel somewhat uneasy about their club’s lack of activity. Cardiff didn’t perform well enough in the previous season’s Championship. The final league standings indicated that much.

Additionally, Cardiff clearly doesn’t want to upset these two players. It will be up to Cardiff to convince them to leave the Cardiff City Stadium, as several Championship teams may be tempted to make an offer to try to persuade them to do so. They don’t appear to be doing a very good job at it at the moment of writing.
