Sheffield Wednesday fans sent warning by Sky Sports pundit after recent blows: ‘a massive mess’
With the new Championship season less than two weeks away, there’s growing unrest at Sheffield Wednesday — and supporters have now been sent a stark warning by a Sky Sports pundit who believes the club is “a massive mess.”
It’s been a turbulent summer at Hillsborough, with off-field issues continuing to overshadow preparations for the 2025/26 campaign. Central to the current crisis is the ongoing uncertainty surrounding manager Danny Röhl.
The German, who guided the Owls to safety in remarkable fashion last season, has not returned for pre-season training and is expected to leave the club. However, financial complications are said to be delaying his exit, with Röhl reportedly still under contract and owed a significant severance package.
Wednesday’s woes extend far beyond the dugout. Owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri has been widely criticised by fans over his handling of the club’s finances, which have plunged the Yorkshire side into chaos.
This year alone, Wednesday have missed wage payments and faced multiple transfer embargoes due to breaches of EFL financial rules. Morale is low among players, staff, and fans — and there appears to be no clear plan in place to stabilise the situation before the season begins.
Sky Sports pundit and former Championship midfielder David Prutton weighed in on the situation during a recent appearance on the network. His assessment was blunt.
“Sheffield Wednesday is a massive mess right now,” Prutton said. “From top to bottom, there’s no clarity, no leadership. You’ve got a manager who doesn’t want to be there, players who haven’t been paid properly, and a fanbase who are being kept in the dark.”
Prutton also questioned the future direction of the club under Chansiri’s ownership.
“This isn’t just a bad few weeks — it’s the result of years of poor decisions,” he added. “The supporters deserve better. This is a club with incredible tradition, a loyal fanbase, and a huge stadium. But they’re being dragged down by instability at the top.”
The concerns echoed by Prutton are shared by large sections of the Wednesday support. Chansiri, who has owned the club since 2015, has often been criticised for a lack of communication and transparency. His reign has included both promotion pushes and relegation, along with mounting financial struggles.
The absence of Röhl from pre-season has only added to the confusion, with players reportedly frustrated at the lack of structure and planning. With just days left until the Championship campaign begins, the Owls appear disjointed and underprepared.
For fans, the joy of last season’s dramatic survival now feels distant. What lies ahead could be even more difficult unless swift and decisive action is taken.
As things stand, Sheffield Wednesday’s new season is shrouded in uncertainty — and unless something changes soon, the alarm bells ringing from pundits and supporters alike may turn into full-blown crisis calls.
