Sunderland Submit £22m Offer to Sign South American ‘Phenomenon’

Sunderland Submit £22m Offer to Sign South American ‘Phenomenon’

Sport Witness reports that Sunderland has submitted a fresh bid for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi.

After nearly a decade out of the top tier, Sunderland made their comeback to the Premier League last season, having

assembled a youthful squad with plenty of potential in the Championship. In his first season as manager, Regis Le

Bris led Sunderland to the playoff final, where they defeated Sheffield United in stoppage time.

In the transfer market, Sunderland hasn’t wasted much time. The Black Cats have added left-back Reinildo, wingers

Simon Adingra and Chemsdine Talbi, and midfielders Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki in addition to Enzo Le Fee, who

joined as part of his previous loan agreement. Recently, the club has been connected to an ambitious deal for Granit

Xhaka.

Now it would appear that the Stadium of Light side are looking to close a deal for one of their defensive targets.

Sunderland Want Lucumi

Bologna could still demand more

Jhon Lucumi

According to Sport Witness and Il Resto del Carlino, Sunderland has submitted a second proposal for Jhon Lucumi.

The club has now made Bologna an offer of about £22 million in total, matching their initial asking price for the

defender after their initial proposal was rejected.

However, it appears that Bologna now wants little more than £24 million, which was Lucumi’s release clause until it

expired earlier this month. Bologna is said to have offered Lucumi a new contract, but Lucumi has not yet replied.

Lucumi, who has been a member of Bologna since 2022, has assisted the team in winning the Coppa Italia and

making it to the Champions League.

Jhon Lucumi 24/25 Season Stats
Competition Appearances Yellow Cards Red Cards Minutes Played
Serie A 32 8 1 2,613′
Champions League 7 2 0 530′
Coppa Italia 5 1 0 393′

Lucumi, who has been called a “phenomenon,” would be a fantastic addition to Sunderland’s roster, providing them

with a superior defensive player to their present choices. But it’s still unclear if the Black Cats can reach an

agreement.
