Ipswich Town: George Hirst on club’s summer signings

George Hirst on Ipswich Town’s summer acquisitions

Three of Town’s four summer recruits will likely compete for starting XI spots: midfielder Azor Matusiwa (Rennes, £7.8m), centre-back Cedric Kipre (Reims, loan), and full-back/winger Ashley Young (Everton, free).

Both Kipre and Matusiwa have played in Town’s opening two preseason games, and Young, a Premier League veteran, is anticipated to play tomorrow night (7.30pm) against Charlton at Colchester United. They will all contribute quality to the team, according to Hirst, who has scored three goals in the public friendly so far.

“Very good,” he exclaimed following Friday’s 3-1 victory over Aberdeen. “All of them are fantastic signings, in my opinion. You can tell from Azor’s play today that he is a persistent guy who likes to make tackles and will move about. Then, when he has the ball, he is composed, calm, and trying to pick a pass. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to practice against Cedric, who is an amazing athlete and not someone you want to do that every day! His athleticism and other attributes will be enormous for us as well. I don’t really need to say much about Ashley Young’s career because it speaks for itself.

“We’ll be in a good place if we can learn five percent of what he knows.” “He’s played however many games and won however many trophies – so having someone like that in the building is only good for the squad.”
