“I’m hoping we can,” Mark Robins said of Stoke City’s chances of re-signing Steven Nzonzi.
Stoke City has declared their intention to strengthen their summer transfer window operations after teetering on the verge of relegation from the Championship to League One the previous season. After Stoke acquired Sorba Thomas from Huddersfield Town, manager Mark Robins has so far added some outstanding additions. Divin Mubama was brought in on loan from Manchester City, along with Robert Bozenik, Aaron Cresswell, and Maksym Talovierov. Wouter Burger’s transfer to Hoffenheim and Sol Sidibe’s departure from Stoke for PSV Eindhoven ahead of the upcoming season, however, have clouded both acquisitions.
Re-signing Steven Nzonzi, who has resumed training with his old team, would eliminate the gloomy aura surrounding the Potters’ summer window. Robins has now revealed the possibility of the Frenchman’s Stoke farewell. Ten years after leaving the Potters for Spanish powerhouse Sevilla, Nzonzi reunited with Stoke last week to watch the team’s 2-1 preseason friendly victory over Crewe Alexandra with Jon Walters. The Potters supporters were clamouring for the World Cup champion to return after the Frenchman was photographed with Walters, his former teammate and current sporting director.
Nzonzi, 36, played 31 games across all competitions for Sepahan, a Persian Gulf team, last season. However, he left the team last summer after just one season because of Middle East hostilities. “Steven is training with us,” Robins told the Stoke Sentinel, hinting to the possibility of an emotional comeback. He is a fantastic player and a huge presence. He’s been amazing, so the only question is if he can still perform physically given how long he’s been out of the country, but he’s been playing frequently, so he’s still competent. I am ecstatic.

Because it’s different—the player is a joke—we should try to bring him anyplace close to where he needs to be in order to perform in the Championship. “He had a great time at the club before.” Clearly, he continued to advance in his career.
He desired to return, train, and attempt to assist us in reaching some of the milestones and signposts along the path, if not the ultimate goal. He’s a wonderful boy. It’s fascinating, and I hope we can support one another. Nzonzi will be joining a very different team if he signs a contract with Stoke for the second time in his eighteen-year professional career, but his influence might be equally significant.
