Doughty Pens Emotional Message to Hatters Fans After Leaving Luton for Millwall

Wingback Alfie Doughty has paid an emotional tribute to Luton Town and their supporters after completing a transfer to Championship side Millwall for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old’s exit had been widely anticipated following his absence from Saturday’s pre-season goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur. The move brings an end to Doughty’s three-year stay at Kenilworth Road, during which he established himself as a fan favourite and a key figure in one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.

Doughty made 105 appearances for the Hatters, scoring six goals, and was instrumental in the side that won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in the summer of 2023. His attacking flair, energy on the flank, and relentless work rate earned him plaudits from both supporters and teammates alike.

Taking to social media to say his goodbyes, Doughty penned a heartfelt message to the Hatters faithful.

“From the very first day I joined this club, I felt nothing but love and support. Luton Town gave me the platform to grow both as a player and as a person. The memories we’ve created together – from tough nights in the Championship to that unforgettable promotion to the Premier League – will stay with me forever,” Doughty wrote.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially to a club and a community that’s meant so much to me. But now is the right time for a new chapter. I’ll always be grateful to the staff, my teammates, and most importantly, the fans. You believed in me from the start and stuck with us through everything. I’ll forever be proud to have worn the shirt.”

The move to Millwall marks a return to south London for Doughty, who began his career at Charlton Athletic before spells at Stoke City and Luton. His versatility down the left, capable of playing as a wingback or in more advanced roles, will be a major asset to the Lions as they look to mount a serious challenge for promotion this season.

Millwall boss Joe Edwards was quick to praise his new signing, calling Doughty “a player with real pedigree at this level” and “someone who can bring energy, experience, and a winning mentality to the squad.”

Meanwhile, Luton Town released a brief statement thanking Doughty for his service and wishing him well in his future career. The club acknowledged his contribution to their top-flight promotion and described him as “a model professional who gave his all every time he stepped onto the pitch.”

As Doughty begins a new chapter at The Den, Hatters fans will no doubt remember his tireless runs down the wing, crucial contributions in key games, and the humility with which he conducted himself on and off the pitch. His departure marks the end of an era – but his legacy at Kenilworth Road is secure.
