Latest: Portsmouth make call on Tottenham Hotspur man’s future amid bid to earn Fratton deal.

The long-serving Spurs custodian is hoping to land a deal with Pompey after leaving the Premier League club this summer.

Alfie Whiteman has left Pompey to pursue a Fratton future.

John Mousinho has confirmed that the man who left Tottenham this summer has also left PO4, following a trial with the Blues.

Pompey make Spurs keeper call

However, Mousinho has stated that his club will continue to look for another custodian in the coming weeks as their transfer plans move forward.

Whiteman has been training with Pompey in preseason after ending a 10-year relationship with the London Premier League club in recent months. The 26-year-old played in Woking’s first preseason win and the behind-closed-doors victory over Crawley.

However, Whiteman did not appear for Reading on Saturday and was not involved with Hawks at Westleigh Park last night.

He stated, “Alfie is no longer with us on trial, and he hasn’t been with us this week, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on where Alfie ends up.”

Despite Whiteman’s departure from PO4, Mousinho has stated that Pompey intend to use four keepers in the first team next season.

Nico Schmid is the club’s established first-choice following an outstanding debut season at PO4, with Ben Killip and Jordan Archer serving as backups for the Austrian. Archer has been linked with a move to League Two club Salford, with Mousinho indicating this week that he will not stand in the way of the former Millwall player if he wants to leave.

Toby Steward, Pompey’s other custodian, is on loan at St Johnstone this season.

Mousinho acknowledged that the Blues don’t have a lot of suitable keeper options right now, but he believes that situation will change in the coming weeks.

Pompey push on with keeper transfers search

He stated, “I still believe we need four goalkeepers, and we have discussed why.” ‘It’s probably not our top priority right now, but we’ll see where we stand in the next 10 days with that.

‘It’s probably not the best market for that right now, but it’s something we’d like to add for training and to strengthen the goalkeeping department in general.’ Mousinho explained earlier this week why he wants four goalkeepers:

‘We want to ensure that we have depth in the goalkeeping department, but it’s a difficult task because having a number one, as we do with Nico, can make it difficult to attract players to the club. ‘Nico, on the other hand, deserves that position based on his performance last season and with Austria. ‘We do talk about having four goalkeepers, and most of the time it’s for training purposes.

We play a lot of small-sided games with two pitches going at the same time, and to do so at a high level, you need four goalkeepers.
