‘The best team’ – Ex-Leeds United star offers Sunderland judgment ahead of Real Betis preseason friendly

Former Leeds United full-back Junior Firpo claimed that Sunderland were “the best team” he and his former teammates faced in the Championship last season.

The Black Cats were promoted back to the Premier League last season alongside Daniel Farke’s side and Burnley, but only through the play-offs after finishing fourth in the second division.

Sunderland drew 2-2 at the Stadium of Light in their first two encounters with Leeds, before losing 2-1 late at Elland Road.

Even though he hasn’t lost to Regis Le Bris’ team, Firpo has maintained that they were the most formidable opponents he faced in his last season in England.

Since then, the Dominican defender has signed a permanent contract with Real Betis, and this weekend, when his new team visits Wearside for a preseason friendly, he will play against the Black Cats once more.

According to Mucho Deporte, Firpo told Betis TV, “I know Coventry well; they’re a tough team that tries to play football,” as he looked ahead to Saturday’s game and a Wednesday night meeting with Coventry City.

Last year, Sunderland appeared to be the finest team we faced. Since they’ve improved, I’m confident that these two matches will be quite challenging.

Additionally, Firpo described how a demanding Championship schedule has helped him be ready for the task of playing in Europe with Betis in the upcoming months.

“I’m used to it from England, where we played 46 Championship matches and four competitions,” he continued. I’m enthusiastic and ready because we all prefer playing to training.
