Southampton rebuff West Ham approach over midfielder swoop, European giants lurking

Southampton have pushed back against West Ham United’s enquiry for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid now monitoring the situation closely, according to a report from *The Sun’s* Jack Rosser.

As the Saints gear up for a promotion push under new manager Will Still, keeping hold of key players like Fernandes appears to be a clear priority. After suffering relegation to the Championship last season, Southampton are aiming to bounce straight back up and avoid the growing perception of being a ‘yo-yo club’, having alternated between the Premier League and the second tier in each of the past three campaigns.

Despite the club actively targeting new additions to bolster Still’s squad, much of the current transfer window has been dominated by speculation over outgoings. One of the standout names attracting interest is Fernandes, a 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder who enjoyed a breakout campaign last season and is seen as a central figure in Still’s plans.

According to Rosser’s update on social media platform X, Premier League side West Ham have made an approach for Fernandes, sounding out the possibility of a move. However, Southampton have shown no willingness to negotiate, firmly rebuffing the Hammers’ interest and signalling their intent to retain one of their prized assets.

The report adds that West Ham “have not been given encouragement” regarding their enquiry, which could force Graham Potter’s side to look elsewhere in their search for midfield reinforcements. The lack of a green light from Southampton suggests they are not interested in engaging in talks unless an overwhelming offer comes their way.

Meanwhile, European giants Atletico Madrid are keeping close tabs on Fernandes as they continue to reshape their midfield. The Spanish club, known for identifying and developing young talent, are believed to view Fernandes as a potential long-term investment. No formal bid has been made yet, but their presence in the background could complicate Southampton’s efforts to retain the youngster, especially if Fernandes expresses a desire to play at the highest level.

Will Still is believed to be a strong admirer of Fernandes and wants him to play a key role in his system. The Portuguese youth international’s composure, tactical awareness, and range of passing have made him one of the most highly rated midfielders in the Championship.

Fernandes’ contract at St Mary’s runs until 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position should any suitor attempt to prise him away. But with big names now circling, Southampton will be braced for further interest before the transfer window closes.

For now, though, the message from the south coast is clear: Mateus Fernandes is not for sale — at least not on West Ham’s terms.
