Championship legend with 51 assists drops hint amid Millwall and Middlesbrough transfer links

Millwall and Middlesbrough are said to be interested in signing Barry Bannan as Sheffield Wednesday struggles.

Sheffield Wednesday player Barry Bannan has given a cryptic hint about his future as the Championship club faces a difficult summer away from the pitch. This week, Millwall and Middlesbrough were reported to be interested in signing the veteran.

The 35-year-old is now a free agent after his contract with Hillsborough terminated at the end of June. However, the midfielder has continued to practice with the Owls, and it has been widely believed that he wanted to stay at Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite his allegiances, Bannan may be unable to do so because the second-tier organization is struggling financially. The Championship season begins on August 10, although the team currently has only 14 senior players after a massive departure.

Barry Bannan shares a mysterious remark on social media

Manager Danny Rohl also left Hillsborough after the club delayed a pre-season friendly against Burnley and failed to pay staff members on time. Bannan turned to social media ahead of the weekend to offer a positive message with his fans while the crisis unfolds.

According to a screenshot posted by The Star writer Joe Crann, Bannan’s tweet read: “Remember, no storm lasts forever. Hold on. Be brave. Every storm is fleeting, and we are never alone.” The statement had Sheffield Wednesday fans scrambling to read between the lines, hopeful that the midfielder will stay at Hillsborough. Finally, the message might be construed either way, but it will undoubtedly pique the interest of Millwall and Boro.

The two Championship opponents were listed by The Star as teams who could benefit from Sheffield Wednesday’s misery if Bannan is forced to quit the club. The player has been at Hillsborough since 2015 and brings valuable experience to the Lions squad. Bannan has made 374 Championship matches, scoring 18 goals and assisting 51 times. The midfielder has also played in the Premier League for Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

Millwall sign a former QPR and Spurs midfielder

Millwall have already bolstered their midfield this summer, signing Massimo Luongo on a free transfer from Ipswich Town at the end of July. The 32-year-old has signed a one-year contract at The Den after training with the squad throughout the pre-season.

Luongo, a former Sheffield Wednesday player, has also represented Tottenham Hotspur and QPR. Speaking about the transfer, director of football Steve Gallen stated, “Massimo is a fantastic talent. Everyone is presumably aware that he has been training with us and joined us in Spain for our two games last week. He is a player I know well from his time at QPR, and he brings a wealth of experience to midfield, which is one of the reasons we signed him.

“He has had a great few seasons with Ipswich Town, helping them to the Premier League, where he made 11 appearances last campaign, and has been an excellent addition around the training ground already.”
