Southampton Confirm That Aaron Ramsdale Has Joined Newcastle United
Southampton FC have officially confirmed that goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has joined Newcastle United on a season-long loan, allowing the England international to return to Premier League action ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The 26-year-old, who joined the Saints earlier this summer following limited opportunities at Arsenal, had made it clear that regular Premier League football was essential if he hoped to retain his place in Gareth Southgate’s England plans ahead of the upcoming international tournaments. Now, with his move to St James’ Park sealed, he gets the chance to compete at the highest level once again.
In a short statement, Southampton said:
“The club wishes Aaron well at Newcastle, who finished fifth in the Premier League last term to qualify for the Champions League for the forthcoming campaign.”
While the club did not disclose further details, sources close to the deal suggest that Newcastle will pay a £4 million loan fee and cover Ramsdale’s full wages throughout the season. The agreement is also believed to include an option to buy at the end of the loan period, though the specific terms and triggers for that clause remain undisclosed.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is understood to have pushed for Ramsdale’s arrival as he looks to add further quality and experience between the sticks for a demanding season that includes European football.
As for Southampton, the decision reflects the club’s pragmatic approach in helping a player pursue his ambitions while securing a financially sensible deal. With several goalkeepers still on the books at St Mary’s, including Gavin Bazunu, the move also helps ease competition for the No.1 jersey.
Though Ramsdale’s stay at Southampton was brief, fans will no doubt wish him the very best as he embarks on the next chapter of his career in the North East.
